UGM Ready for 2022 Formula Student Netherlands

Uncategorized Tuesday, 21 June 2022

The UGM formula team Bimasakti will compete at the upcoming Formula Student Netherlands (FSN) in Assen, The Netherlands, on 9-14 July 2022. UGM gave the team a warm send-off at the Balairung yard on Monday (20/6), wishing them the best of luck.

“Today marks the launch of the latest generation car designed by Bimasakti and the team’s send-off to the formula competition in the Netherlands,” said Director of Student Affairs Dr. Suharyadi.

The FSN competition challenges students to understand, design, and develop a formula-style racing car. For this 2022 race, Bimasakti gets ready with its newest 11th-generation formula car.

“We appreciate the support from our partners and thank everyone who has guided this team,” said the Director.

As technical and financial challenges were inevitable, Suharyadi encouraged the team to turn these lemons into lemonade. Adversity gives them valuable experience for the future.

“What is more important is how the team can learn something along the way. The non-academic process will come in handy when you graduate and work later,” said Suharyadi.

Dean of the Faculty of Engineering Prof. Selo said he was proud of the team because they could optimally set up the vehicle amid limited sponsors and time.

“I would like to thank the sponsors for their assistance so that students can participate in this competition. I can only encourage the team to achieve the best results,” said Prof. Selo.

Head of Bimasakti Aditya Maheranta said the silver lining of the two-year pandemic was that the team could prepare well for this European competition. He admitted that the team was not aiming for first place but would give it their best shot.

“We do not represent Bimasakti alone, but Indonesia,” said Aditya.

German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier Visits Universitas Gadjah Mada

NetworkPartnerships for the GoalsZero Hunger Friday, 17 June 2022

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) received a visit from German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier on Friday (17/6). UGM is the only university included in this series of visits to commemorate the 70th anniversary of Indonesia’s diplomatic ties with Germany.

On his UGM trip, President Steinmeier attended a research product exhibition and discussion entitled Food Security, Global Challenges, and Dependencies with several experts and panelists.

“I am not an expert, but I am very interested in this issue. I travel a lot, and in the countries I visit, I see how we are dealing with food crises,” he said.

Germany is one of the most important donors to the UN World Food Programme (WFP). However, according to him, it is not an achievement. It is the support the international community deserves. The German government cares and is ready to help world countries facing the food crisis.

“We have to analyze what the root of the problem is. And we want to know what kind of support is expected from us,” said the President.

Prof. Damayanti Buchori (Lead Co-Chair T20 Task Force 4 Food Security and Sustainable Agriculture), Felippa Amanta (Head of Research, Center for Indonesian Policy Studies), Christa Räder (WFP representative), Dr. Yose Rizal Damuri (Executive Director of CSIS and Executive Co-Chair T20), Dr. Linda Yanti Sulistiawati (UGM’s international law expert), and Maria Angela Putri (UGM student) were among the names present as panelists.

“Since before, we have faced problems related to global food, but these have been exacerbated by Russian aggression in Ukraine and climate issues,” said Minister of State for Europe and Climate and moderator of the discussion, Dr. Anna Lührmann.

In her remarks, UGM Rector Prof. Ova Emilia highlighted the friendship between Germany and Indonesia. Germany has been a learning space for many Indonesian academics, including UGM lecturers.

“On behalf of Universitas Gadjah Mada, I warmly welcome President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. We feel very honored to receive a visit from the President,” said the Rector. “The third president of Indonesia, President Habibie, graduated from a German university, while UGM is the university where the current President of Indonesia, President Joko Widodo, studies. This commonality bolsters our ties.”

UGM has established intensive and longstanding collaborations with German educational institutions, such as RWTH Aachen and DAAD. She hopes to strengthen this by intensifying existing cooperation and developing more in other strategic fields.

UGM Declares Zero Tolerance Stance on Violence

Community ServiceEducationPeace, Justice and Strong InstitutionsQuality EducationStudent Community ServiceWorkshops Thursday, 9 June 2022

UGM Rector Prof. Ova Emilia has affirmed the university’s stance to take a zero-tolerance approach to violence, especially sexual harassment and violence. The anti-violence campus campaign will kick off online at the annual student community service briefing on Saturday (11/6) and will target all campus members.

“Globally, universities are the second most common place for sexual violence,” said Ova, Thursday (9/6).

According to Ova, UGM has made several efforts to handle sexual violence on campus since 2019. UGM issued Rector’s Regulation Number 1 of 2020 on Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence by the UGM Community on 24 January 2020, a year before Ministerial Regulation Number 30 of 2021 on Prevention and Handling of Sexual Violence in Higher Education Institutions was made effective.

UGM has organized literacy, skills, and SOP workshops on sexual violence prevention and handling, including an introduction to its legal aspects, for students, lecturers, and staff. There is also a dedicated Integrated Service Unit for sexual harassment and violence contactable whenever a case occurs.

Recently, the University has also established a Crisis Center on its official website, which allows the UGM community to find information and a list of hotlines and links to file reports or complaints or get support regarding the acts of violence they have experienced.

“We have set up a Crisis Center on our website where students can report from anywhere. In the event of an emergency, we hope this system will help us better anticipate and deal with the situation. That way, we can create a campus environment that is safe and free from all forms of violence,” said Ova.

Head of Health Promoting University (HPU), Prof. Yayi Suryo Prabandari, added that in 2019 UGM had declared itself a physically, mentally, and socially healthy campus. This initiative includes literacy and the promotion of zero tolerance for violence, bullying, and harassment, healthy diets, physical activity, mental health, reproductive health, and a safe and inclusive environment for people with disabilities.

Director of Community Service Prof. Irfan D. Prijambada said that this year, UGM would dispatch 6,250 students to 28 provinces, 85 regencies, and 197 districts across the country on 25 June. He also talked about the Crisis Center of the Community Service Program that had existed since the program’s establishment.

“This Crisis Center is for emergencies during the program,” said Irfan.

Biology Student Creates Eco Lindi to Neutralize Trash Can Odors

Environment & Disaster MitigationGood Health and Well-beingResearchResponsible Consumption and Production Friday, 3 June 2022

Rania Naura Anindhita, a student of the UGM Faculty of Biology, has created a liquid formula of leachate, molasses, sulfuric acid, and organic catalysts mixture to eliminate the smell of garbage cans.

“The Eco Lindi is made from leachate mixed with molasses, sulfuric acid, and organic catalysts and is proven to get rid of unpleasant odors of garbage,” said Anindhita, Friday (3/6).

According to her, she can produce 10 thousand liters of Eco Lindi in one day. Users only need to spray the liquid onto garbage heaps or cans and wait less than 10 minutes to see the results. Eco Lindi has been tested in several landfill sites, markets, and farms and is declared safe for livestock.

“After 3-10 minutes, the smell will vanish. This formula is suitable for all waste that produces odors and can also be used as fertilizer,” said Anindhita.

Raina said that her father, who at that time served as Head of the Environment and Hygiene Service (DLHK) of Sidoarjo Regency, was behind this creation. She was challenged by her father to find a solution to the smell problem in landfill sites.

“The process of neutralizing odors and composting takes about 6-8 weeks. My father dared me to shorten the time. After going through countless discussions and studies, I finally found the Eco Lindi formula,” she said.

With this innovation, Rania received the Trash Control Heroes award from Sidoarjo Regent Ahmad Muhdlor.

UGM to Build Spiritual Spaces for Its Community

Community ServiceGood Health and Well-beingSustainable Cities and CommunitiesTraining and Projects Saturday, 21 May 2022

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) will kick off the construction of spiritual facilities to accommodate all students, lecturers, and staff members of Christians, Catholics, Hindus, Buddhists, and Confucians in one central area.

The Spiritual Area is expected to take around 6-8 months to complete and will be connected to Islamic religious facilities at the Mardliyah Islamic Center and UGM Mosque.

“This area will serve as a symbol of tolerance and religious harmony for our students and accommodate positive activities,” said UGM Rector Prof. Panut Mulyono at the laying of the area’s cornerstone Saturday (21/5).

The Rector said that it had become one of UGM’s priorities to develop such an area. UGM as Pancasila University is an open educational institution that has communities from various ethnic, religious, and even national backgrounds.

“Good practices carried out in this area will be remembered by our students when they graduate and form their mindset as leaders moving forward,” he said.

Chair of the UGM Board of Trustees, Prof. Pratikno, welcomes the establishment of the Spiritual Area that embodies the country’s motto Bhinneka Tunggal Ika (Unity in Diversity). Diversity in Indonesia needs to be maintained as a form of education for future generations.

“Education is not only done in the classroom but also requires exemplary practices. This Spiritual Area is an example of Bhinneka Tunggal Ika. If we work together for this, we will not only save Indonesia but also humanity,” said Pratikno.

UGM Researchers Breed New Black Soybean Cultivar

AgricultureDecent Work and Economic GrowthLife on LandResearch Monday, 16 May 2022

A team of researchers at the UGM Faculty of Agriculture is currently working on a new black soybean cultivar derived from the Mallika variety. The study, which has been ongoing for the past two years, is expected to produce a more improved, high-yielding cultivar than the Mallika. Team leader Dr. Tri Harjoko said the new cultivar had tripled the number of pods per plant over three harvests and three plantings.

“The Mallika generally has 200–300 pods per plant. However, our research shows that this new variety produces 600–1200 pods per plant, meaning that one seed we plant can produce 1,200 pods or 2,000 seeds at harvest,” said Harjoko in Bantul, Yogyakarta on Sunday (15/5).

So far, it has exceeded the average national production capacity of black soybeans (1.3 to 1.7 tonnes per hectare) with 5 to 6 tonnes per hectare. The team is now examining the variety for its adaptability during rainy and dry seasons.

“We have a superior product and a record of its pod production potential. There was relatively no difference when planted in both the wet and dry seasons–and that’s a competitive advantage. The potential can be three times the national production. We only need consistency in terms of production,” he said.

According to Harjoko, his party is targeting the new cultivar to be released in the next two years as a successor to the Mallika, a black soybean variety developed by UGM, with an average production of 6 tonnes per hectare.

“In addition to testing for pod production and adaptation in several locations, the new cultivar must also undergo physiological tests to determine its protein and fat content,” said Harjoko.
