On-campus and Local Health and Wellbeing Services in UGM
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) demonstrates a strong commitment to enhancing the well-being and inclusivity of its academic community through strategic policies and initiatives. These efforts are institutionalized through sustainable governance of related units and organizations, resulting in clear regulations, practical guidelines, and programs that support health and well-being services on campus. UGM also actively initiates collaborative forums that strengthen its commitment to holistic community empowerment in the health sector. This approach underscores UGM’s role as a leader in promoting health, inclusivity, and equity within higher education.
Integrated Health Services on Campus
Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) further reinforces its commitment to a healthy campus environment through the establishment of the Biro Pelayanan Kesehatan Terpadu (BPKT), an institutional body responsible for integrating various health services across the university. The presence of BPKT reflects a systematic governance approach to ensuring that all members of the academic community have access to comprehensive, coordinated, and sustainable healthcare services.
Through BPKT, UGM connects its healthcare facilities, ranging from primary care services at Gadjah Mada Medical Center (GMC) to advanced referral services at the UGM Academic Hospital (RSA UGM). This integration enables the development of a tiered and efficient healthcare system, encompassing promotive and preventive measures as well as curative and rehabilitative care. As a result, the academic community benefits not only from medical treatment but also from health education and continuous support to maintain overall well-being.
In addition, BPKT plays a key role in strengthening coordination, administration, and referral systems, ensuring that healthcare pathways are clear and easily accessible. This function also supports broader campus health initiatives, including the promotion of healthy lifestyles, the enhancement of health literacy, and the provision of mental health support.
Health Service Support
UGM Academic Hospital (RSA UGM) and Gadjah Mada Medical Center (GMC) together form an integrated healthcare system that ensures comprehensive access to physical healthcare services, as well as information and education, for both the university community and the wider public. RSA UGM, as a top-tier academic referral hospital, provides advanced and comprehensive care ranging from emergency services and outpatient consultations to inpatient treatment and specialized and subspecialized services, supported by a multidisciplinary cluster system that enables coordinated and holistic patient management. This access is further expanded through telemedicine, home care, and executive health check-up services, making healthcare more flexible and reachable. At the same time, GMC functions as the primary healthcare gateway, delivering first-level services based on a family doctor and managed care approach, including general care and dental care, maternal and child health services, laboratory testing, pharmacy, and psychological and nutritional consultations, while emphasizing promotive and preventive care through counseling, fitness programs, and public health campaigns.
In addition to physical healthcare access, both institutions prioritize the provision of accessible health information and education. RSA UGM offers a wide range of health education materials, digital platforms, and patient communication channels that provide information on disease prevention, treatment, and general well-being, supported by healthcare professionals who deliver clear, patient-centered explanations. Beyond its institutional role, RSA UGM contributes to community education and outreach by conducting public health programs and social services. Similarly, GMC strengthens health literacy through educational content such as articles, videos, and community campaigns, ensuring that individuals are equipped with knowledge to manage their health proactively. As an academic hospital, RSA UGM also plays a central role in education and research by serving as a clinical training center for students and healthcare professionals, offering internships, professional training, academic exchanges, and access to digital academic resources, while fostering innovation through research and clinical studies.
The integration between GMC and RSA UGM reflects a tiered healthcare model in which GMC acts as the primary care gatekeeper, handling initial consultations and preventive services, and RSA UGM serves as the referral center for more complex secondary and tertiary care needs. This system ensures continuity of care while simultaneously linking healthcare delivery with education and research. Beyond these institutional services, faculties within UGM also actively contribute to community engagement by organizing regular social service programs that deliver healthcare services, health education, and preventive interventions to local communities, particularly underserved populations. These collective efforts strengthen equitable access to healthcare while promoting broader public health awareness and improving overall community well-being.
As part of its integrated healthcare system alongside GMC and RSA UGM, Universitas Gadjah Mada also provides specialized services through RSGM Prof. Soedomo. This dental and oral hospital offers comprehensive care ranging from basic treatments to specialized services, while also serving as a clinical training and research facility in dentistry. Its presence strengthens UGM’s overall healthcare provision for both the academic community and the wider public.
In addition, Klinik Korpagama supports accessible primary healthcare services, particularly for academic and administrative staff. It provides general check-ups, minor treatments, and routine health monitoring. This facility complements UGM’s tiered healthcare system by ensuring easily accessible frontline services, while contributing to the well-being and productivity of the university community.
The existence of institutions to promote healthy lifestyles on campus
UGM demonstrates a strong commitment to advancing well-being, health, and the adoption of healthy lifestyles among members of its academic community as well as the wider society through various strategic policies and initiatives. Internally, this commitment is reflected in the establishment of the Health Promoting University (HPU) as a strategic measure to create a campus environment that is healthy, safe, and conducive to well-being.
The HPU aims to promote the health and well-being of students, lecturers, educational staff, and the broader community through effective and innovative policies; to channel teaching and research capacities into health promotion activities that encourage healthy lifestyle behaviors; and to develop integrated health promotion networks along with facilities that are beneficial to society.
This commitment is realized through seven key activities: enhancing health literacy; strengthening physical activity; promoting healthy dietary practices; supporting mental health; enforcing zero tolerance toward drugs, tobacco, and alcohol; enforcing zero tolerance toward violence, bullying, and harassment; and creating an environment that is healthy, safe, and inclusive for persons with disabilities.

These initiatives are designed to address disparities in healthcare access, particularly in rural and remote areas of Indonesia, with a focus on prevention, early detection, and continuous health education.
A key pillar of UGM’s approach is the implementation of interprofessional education and community health programs, such as the Comprehensive Community Health Care–Education Program (CCHC-EP) and its development into the Community and Family Health Care with Interprofessional Education (CFHC-IPE). These programs engage students from multiple disciplines in long-term, integrated learning experiences while delivering direct healthcare services to individuals, families, and communities.
UGM actively conducts a wide range of impactful activities. For instance, a free health screening program in Getas Village, Blora, served approximately 300 residents, providing general check-ups, laboratory tests (including blood pressure, cholesterol, and blood sugar), medical consultations, and the distribution of health care packages. Similarly, the Pekan Sehat Balangan 2025 event in Sleman offered free health screenings and direct consultations with medical professionals for local residents.
In the area of preventive health education, UGM organizes organized a community service program in the working area of Puskesmas Ngemplak in Sleman to prevent postpartum blues by strengthening support for pregnant women through education and engagement of husbands and health workers. The activity, led by a multidisciplinary team, featured the “Kelas Ayah Sayang Ibu Hamil” (Father‑Loving‑Pregnant‑Wife Class) promotes the involvement of husbands in supporting maternal health and preventing postpartum blues, reflecting a holistic approach that integrates both physical and mental health aspects.
UGM also prioritizes women’s reproductive health through targeted educational initiatives, including community empowerment programs for coastal women in Gunungkidul and reproductive health seminars for adolescents in Boyolali. Beyond education, UGM strengthens healthcare services in underserved regions by deploying medical professionals to remote areas, such as RSUD Weda in North Maluku, to improve maternal and neonatal care.
Within the university environment, UGM provides inclusive sexual and reproductive healthcare services, including confidential counselling, medical check-ups, and evidence-based education through online platforms such as Massive Open Online Courses (MOOCs). These efforts aim to increase awareness, reduce stigma, and promote informed decision-making regarding reproductive health.
Overall, UGM’s integrated approach combining education, service delivery, and community empowerment reflects a comprehensive effort to enhance public health outcomes and support the development of an inclusive and sustainable healthcare system.
