UGM Policy for minimisation of disposable items

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has implemented several policies and initiatives aimed at minimising the use of disposable items, particularly single-use plastics, to promote environmental sustainability on campus.

Circular Letter on Waste Reduction: In June 2024, the Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Finance issued Circular Letter Number 6627/UN1.P4/PL.00.00/2024, emphasising efforts to reduce waste in food and beverage services. Implementation of minimization of disposable items at Faculty and Center Level

Many faculties in Universitas Gadjah Mada initiate to issue letters of instruction in order to support efforts to reduce non-organic waste in the Universitas Gadjah Mada environment, especially those originating from the use of synthetic cork/Styrofoam in flower board arrangements in certain events and functions. Non-organic materials in the celebrations of events and functions should be replaced by natural fresh flowers, plants, or fruits.

d. UGM Postgraduate School Implement Healthy Living in Meetings: Consume Local Snacks and Drinks Without Cardboard
As a follow-up to the Circular Letter on Efforts to Reduce Waste in Serving Food and Beverages in the Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), the UGM Postgraduate School (SPs) has taken action by implementing a new policy in providing food for official meetings and internal activities. Now, SPs UGM serves healthier snacks that are free from box packaging, as well as local bottled water produced independently by UGM. At the SPs, the use of bottled water is strictly approved only if the bottled water is supplied by Toyagama – the drinking water supply system (DWSS) produced by UGM. The plastic bottle will be further recycled and reused by UGM.

e. Faculty of Psychology Implement an Environmentally Friendly Consumption Serving Policy
The implementation of the policy on Efforts to Reduce Waste in Serving Food and Beverages in the Universitas Gadjah Mada at the Faculty of Psychology is through the use of small stainless-steel plates or plates rather than disposable packaging. Further, for the main meals, faculty Psychology collaborates with catering parties that provide food containers that can be washed and returned.
