Located in Kotagede, Omah UGM is a traditional Javanese building managed by UGM’s Department of Architecture and Planning. As the former capital of the Islamic Mataram Kingdom in the 15th century, Kotagede is known for its ideal representation of Javanese cultural heritage. However, its ageing wooden structures are particularly vulnerable to damage. The 2006 earthquake spurred a gradual recovery in Kotagede, involving local communities, preservationists, the government, and local and international private donors. Omah UGM, a nearly 200-year-old house, was among the historic buildings that survived the earthquake despite sustaining significant damage. The house was purchased by UGM and restored with support from Indonesian and international companies such as JICA, Total Indonesie, Exxon Mobil Oil, etc., as part of a heritage revitalisation program based on Community, Craft, and Culture (3K).
Omah UGM retains the distinctive structure and facade of a traditional Kotagede house, featuring architectural elements such as the pendopo (an open pavilion for gatherings), dalem (the main house), pringgitan (a connecting space between the pendopo and dalem), sentong (bedrooms), and gandhok (side wings). The building’s materials and ornaments have been preserved to maintain the authentic character of Kotagede. One unique feature is the wooden walls of the dalem, a rare attribute in this heritage area.
Today, Omah UGM serves as a centre for cultural preservation, disaster mitigation training, and student learning in heritage conservation. Popular for educational visits and tourism, Omah UGM symbolises the successful preservation and revitalisation of Yogyakarta’s heritage.
