UGM Students Produce Medical Devices to Simplify Surgery Process on Cats

UGM students Lintang Fathonasyifa, Naura Ajeng Pratiwi, Khairunnisa Aqillah, and Muhammad Wildan Nasir from the Veterinary Medicine study program, and Ilham Ali Hasani from the Mechanical Engineering study program created a practical medical device for veterinarians to perform ovariohysterectomy or cat sterilization operations. With the guidance of Aria Ika Septana, a lecturer from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine UGM, they successfully produced and marketed the medical device called Fixa-21.

Their marketed products are part of the Student Creativity Program (PKM) in Entrepreneurship, which previously received full funding from the Ministry of Education and Culture, Research, and Technology in 2021. Fixa-21 is also qualified to compete in the National Student Scientific Week (PIMNAS) online from 25 to 29 October 2021.

“We have seen veterinarians still using a leash on the operating table to tie the cat’s paw before performing the surgery. It’s complicated, right? And it causes injury to the cat sometimes. So hopefully, by using our tool, veterinarians will find it easier and safer to position the cat’s body before surgery,” said Lintang, Saturday (23/10).

Fixa-021 has been marketed through social media and several distributors of medical devices. In addition, Fixa-021 has several resellers known as ‘fixanimal partners’. So far, Fixanimal partners consist of students from the Faculty of Veterinary Medicine in Indonesia and Malaysia.

“Until now, we are still selling products online through Instagram @fixanimal. Yesterday we also offered it to several distributors, animal health agencies, and clinics. Alhamdulillah, some veterinarians have used it,” concluded Lintang.
