UGM Diving Unit Teaches Students in Karimunjawa to Manage Waste

UGM Dive Unit conducts community service activities in Karimunjawa titled “Go Dive Go Clean”. For seven days, 27 April to 3 May 2018 UGM diving team carried out community service activities and research as an effort to conserve the environment and foster awareness of environmental love for the local community.

On that occasion, the concept of reduce, reuse and recycle as a form of waste management can be conveyed. Through these activities, students are expected to manage waste well. In addition to education-related to waste management, UGM diving unit also delivered information about the first rescue effort while in the water. What to do when saving yourself or helping others while in the water and how to do safe activities in the aquatic environment.

Through this Go Dive Go Clean activity, the UGM diving team is also taking samples for research. Samples were taken in the form of beach sand in the tidal zone of the sea at Legon Lele beach and Ujung Gelam. Sampling is done every 40 meters and the area of ​​the sample point is 50×50 cm at a depth of 1 cm. The sand sample will be examined in more depth to see the microplastic content in it.
