Who we are
Indonesia has been known as an “agrarian nation” as its economy is largely based on cultivating crops and farmland. Agriculture in Indonesia uses 30% of the country’s land area, employs 31.74% (38.29 million people) of its workforce, and contributes to 13.7% of its GDP. In the world, our country is ranked among the top five countries with the highest agricultural production after China, India, the US, and Brazil.
To maximize Indonesia’s agricultural potential, AIC-UGM (the Agrotechnology Innovation Center of Universitas Gadjah Mada), also known as PIAT (Pusat Inovasi Agroteknologi), is committed to becoming an internationally recognized center for integrated agriculture research by supporting the development and implementation of technological innovation that can be directly utilized by the community, government, private sectors, and academics.
Main research themes within the center include sustainable food resources management and sustainable natural resources conservation. A strong emphasis is on technological innovation because future farming processes require the adoption of modern technology. Our research considers the interplay between plants, technology, animals, environment, and community to foster comprehensive approaches.
Currently, AIC manages 35 acres of productive land in Berbah, Sleman and 151 acres in Mangunan-Girirejo, Bantul, Yogyakarta.
