Since the death rate due to Covid-19 in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY) is increasing, the rising demand for coffins is also inevitable. Seeing this problem, the Department of Forest Products Technology (DTHH) of the UGM Faculty of Forestry has helped produce coffins for the deceased.
“The UGM Covid-19 task force informed us regarding the shortage of coffin supplies at the Sardjito Hospital and the Academic Hospital. After that, our team at DTHH felt compelled to help ease the burden on the hospital by providing coffins,” said the Head of DTHH, Dr. Sigit Sunarta, when contacted on Wednesday (21/7).
Sigit said they collaborated with Karbolo Community-Sleman Gamping disaster volunteers, donors, and students in doing this project. There are two production sites: one in Gamping, Sleman, and the other at the DTHH Wood Processing workshop in Klebengan.
So far, DTHH and the team have distributed ten coffins to the Academic Hospital on Sunday (18/7). Meanwhile, ten other coffins were reportedly in the delivery process last night.
“We have given ten coffins to RSA, and today we will send out ten more coffins. Next week, about ten more inshallah,” added Sigit.
