Although it must be carried out online, as many as 20 UGM students have successfully completed the Community Service Program in Imogiri, Bantul, from 29 June to 18 August 2020. The online service for the YO-169 Unit took place in Wukirsari Village, Imogiri District, Bantul Regency, under the guidance of the Field Supervisor, Prof. Dr. Cahyono Agus.
This SCS specifically aims to support the Community Partnership Program (PKM) from the Ministry of Research, Technology, and Higher Education which has been revitalized for the adaptation of Covid-19 into the “Covid-19 Affected Community Empowerment Program: Agro-Geo-Edu-Tourism Gunung Sewu GeoPark”. Various activities were carried out under this theme, including online facilitation programs for the community and the Covid-19 Prevention and Handling program.
“The other programs are the Development of Orphanages and the Perpetual Well Area, the Tri-Education Center Program, Environmental and Community Health, Social Service and Community Empowerment and MSMEs,” said Cahyono Agus, on Monday (24/8).
He said the students had also rehabilitated the “Den Bei” and “Den Nganten” perpetual spring wells in the karst mountain area, famous for drought disasters. With this rehabilitation effort, the availability of clean water can be guaranteed throughout the year.
“This eternal well has also received many visits from religious tourists, riders, or those who are imprisoned. In addition, it also repairs orphanage facilities by repairing walls, rooms, floors, meeting rooms, electricity, clean water, and others so that they become suitable for permanent development activity centers for foster children and surrounding residents,” he said.
Cahyono Agus explained that UGM students also provide internet facilities and LCD projectors so that they can be reached by people at the top of the limestone mountains and allow children to go to school by accessing the internet for their schoolwork. The general public was enthusiastic in flocking up and down the hill to participate in webinars about the latest programs held by students every Sunday morning.
The older women were also enthusiastic about going up and down the hills to visit the orphanage because most do not have their gadgets. The mothers looked very excited when the long-distance webinar displayed a video on a projector screen and the latest information presented by students.
“We are grateful that the Tri-Center for Universal Education Program can be run in remote areas so that children who run school programs from home can be helped by internet access and guidance at the orphanage. There is also the distribution of masks, hand sanitizers, handwashing equipment, water barrels, Covid-19 campaign posters which are also very helpful for residents to deal with Covid-19 independently,” he explained.
Collaborating with KAGAMA Care, YO-169 SCS-CEL Unit Imogiri created a vegetable canthelan program for residents affected by Covid-19 in many places. Not only that, UGM students, in collaboration with BAZNAS DIY are also committed to helping provide food packages to be distributed to residents affected by Covid-19 assisted by UGM and orphanages.
“Alhamdullilah, other donors are also moved to participate in providing additional basic food packages so that the program can run more and more sustainably,” he said.
Cahyono Agus added that the provision of basic necessities and canthelan was given when residents participated in a long-distance webinar centered at the Independent Creative Home, usually held every Sunday morning and on special days. Elderly parents were touched by this program. With the help of food packages and vegetables, they were greatly helped because they lived in an area that always experienced drought.
“Especially at this time, the impact of Covid-19 and the drought is tormenting the daily lives of people in the Mount Karst Region. They give thanks and pray that the donors, students, and all parties will always be healthy and receive good fortune and reward from God Almighty,” he explained.
Then together with the ABI community (Agus Bumi Indonesia) Yogyakarta, they collaborated to hold a social service to provide 1,000 catfish seeds and vegetable packages on Sunday, July 12, 2020. This event was collaborated with SCS student webinar that took the theme of catfish-kale cultivation, accompanied by videos and demonstrations.
In addition, collaborating with PPPA Darul Qur’an DIY also donated two goats during Eid al-Adha. Several people also submitted their sacrificial animals to be managed together.
“The support from militant volunteers from Independent Creative Home Foundation (YPKM) coordinated by Budi Ariyanto, S.Kom., with a high fighting spirit, had become the spearhead of virtual SCS program success. Although it was held online, the benefit could be received by the community directly,” he added.
At the end of the service, the SCS-CEL students presented the results of activities that were carried out online on August 14, 2020, involving residents and village and sub-district officials. The presentation of the Community Service Program results was also attended by the Head of Wukirsari Village, Susilo Hapsoro, S.E., and Imogiri Sub-district Head, Dra. Sri Kayatun.
As a result, books, posters, videos, containing various master plans for developing village potential were published in the form of hard-copy, soft-copy, and media links. The results of UGM SCS students are indeed significant as a source of reference for developing and online references about Wukirsari Village.
