The Yogyakarta branch of the Indonesian Rheumatology Association held an online seminar entitled “Knowing Gout and Autoimmune Rheumatic Diseases and Their Treatment” last Saturday (5/12). By collaborating with PT. Novell Pharm. Labs, this seminar was held via the Zoom platform.
Prof. Dr. dr. Nyoman Kertia, Sp.PD-KR., Professor of Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing (FKKMK) UGM, was present as the seminar speaker. He delivered his presentation about things that people need to know about gout and autoimmune rheumatic diseases.
Prof. Nyoman explained that several factors cause gout rheumatism. The disease can be caused by internal factors, namely genetics and other disease conditions. However, he also said it could also be caused from outside by consumption patterns.
“Diseases that attack the joints can be suffered by someone who often eats foods containing purines. These are offal, brains, nuts, cabbage, kale, chips, durian, and pineapple,” he explained.
As for Autoimmunity, Nyoman said it was also caused by internal factors, such as ethnicity, genetics, and gender (women are more vulnerable). Then, external factors, including the environment (sunlight, chemicals, and viral or bacterial infections).
Furthermore, he stated that the two diseases indeed attack the joints of the body. However, rheumatism tends to only attack part of the joints, generally in the toes. In comparison, Autoimmunity attacks more thoroughly the joints in the body.
Then, for the treatment, Nyoman revealed that the cure for both diseases had been found. However, for Autoimmunity, it tends to take longer. It is rather challenging to heal, especially for the type of lupus derivative. “Rheumatism caused by the impact of other diseases is easier to treat. For example, cancer, if the cancer is treated, it will heal by itself,” he explained.
Finally, Nyoman conveyed his messages so that people would avoid the two diseases. For rheumatism, try to prevent or reduce the consumption of foods that contain purines earlier. He also warned that the fatter a person is, the higher the risk of developing rheumatism.
Then, for Autoimmune, he reminded not to get frequent infections, do not stress, do not be too tired, and get enough rest. Regarding diet, he said there had been no research or finding that certain foods can cause Autoimmunity.
