Dr. Eko Purnomo, a pediatric Surgeon of UGM Academic Hospital (RSA), said that phimosis is a normal condition among boys. This condition is a concern if it starts to cause problems such as pain or difficulty urinating.
“Phimosis is a condition in which the membrane covering the male genital head covers the opening for urination. It is a normal condition that happens in infants or children and usually starts to subside after the age of five,” he explained.
He conveyed this in the Cermat Bagas event organized by the UGM Academic Hospital. Eko explained, there are two types of phimosis, namely physiological phimosis and pathological phimosis.
Phimosis among infants and children is called physiological phimosis, a condition where children are born with tight foreskin at birth, and separation occurs naturally over time.
Meanwhile, a person is said to have pathological phimosis if it occurs at an age where the membranes should have been opened. This can happen due to an infection.
“In pathological phimosis, there is connective tissue at the end of the genital skin that is difficult to open. This could be caused by previous infections,” said Eko.
This condition, he explained, can be prevented by maintaining cleanliness to avoid the buildup of dirt that can cause infection. According to him, parents need to pay attention to this when bathing babies to prevent complaints or discomfort in children.
If there are complaints due to phimosis, the treatment given varies depending on the level of the condition experienced, from giving special ointments to surgery.
“In the case of pathological phimosis, children should be immediately taken to the doctor for examination and treatment,” he said.
