Indonesia’s Demographic Dividend from 2010 to 2035 has become a hot topic of discussion as it poses a real challenge for Indonesia. From the Demographic Dividend, the government projects an onward Indonesia in 2045.
“Moving to 2045 Onward Indonesia must be filled with strengthening good character, high competence, and a strong commitment to building the nation and state. This means that we need leaders, managers, and human resources,” said Prof. Djagal Waseso Marseno, Vice-Chancellor for Education, Teaching, and Student Affairs of Universitas Gadjah Mada in the SDGs Seminar Series, Faculty of Geography UGM, Tuesday (25/5).
Based on various statistical data, currently, the competence of Indonesian human resources is still lagging. This is a challenge for Indonesia. Realizing quality human resources needs various types of skills.
“Skills need changing, meaning that time becomes a challenge that will require different skills,” said Djagal.
The campus is one of the means to improve the competence of human resources. Djagal explained an academic needs to have the senses to project the skills needed in the future. The characteristics of future conditions are VUCA, namely Volatility, Uncertainty, Complexity, and Ambiguity. To respond to these conditions, UGM prepares students with skills, knowledge, and values.
UNESCO provides a reference for developing human resources through ESD (Education for Sustainable Development) that focuses on areas such as advancing policy, transforming learning environments, building capacities of educators, empowering and mobilizing youth, and accelerating local-level action. ESD would realize Sustainable Development Goals, which have 17 points covering the five areas.
Leadership and human development start from the citizens who receive formal, informal, and non-formal education and the internalization of ESD Spirit to produce educated graduates with personal integrity.
“Hopefully, when Indonesians do service in their respective jobs, they can become leaders with integrity and professionalism to realize Indonesia’s national vision,” said Djagal.
