To Fight Covid-19 Hoax, ‘Japelidi’ Campaigns in 42 Regional Languages

The Digital Literacy Activists Network ( Jaringan Pegiat Literasi Digital or Japelidi) extracted and produced a variety of accurate information related to Covid-19 into educational videos and posters for the public. The community, most of whose members are lecturers from 78 universities in 30 cities in Indonesia, initiated a campaign entitled “Fight Covid-19 Hoax” to offset the flood of hoaxes in the community.

“We creates a variety of digital content ‘Jaga Sendiri dan Jaga Keluarga (Keep yourself safe, keep your family safe)’ in 42 regional languages, apart from Indonesian and Mandarin. This is so that we can be closer to the daily lives of our plural society. The production of content in local languages will keep increasing according to the community’s needs, “said Dr. Novi Kurnia, Coordinator of Japelidi, on Thursday (26/3).

To disseminate content in local languages, Japelidi collaborated with the Ministry of Women Empowerment and Child Protection of the Republic of Indonesia, the National Cyber Creative Literacy Movement, the Indonesian Community Radio Network (JRKI), and the “Berbeda itu Biasa (different is normal)” Community.

Novi said that the distribution of content was carried out through the Japelidi Instagram (https://www.instagram.com/japelidi/?hl=en) and Twitter (https://twitter.com/japelidi?lang=en) accounts. In addition, the distribution was also carried out through social media accounts and WhatsApp groups of Japelidi members, totaling 163 people, by distributing digital posters such as “Keeping yourself safe, keeps your family safe”, “Personal Data Protection”, and “Reliable Sources of Information”, as well as video graphics containing tips on supporting children to study at home.

“The response from netizens are very positive. For example, many people or communities ask us to send files for them to print themselves and then shared them with elderly residents around them. Some even made it into a banner. Many people indeed do not access social networks so their access to information is limited, ”said the Head of the UGM Faculty of Social and Political Science Master’s Degree Program.

According to Novi, Japelidi also conducted an offline campaign by distributing soap and hand sanitizers to residents who still have to work outside their homes, such as motorcycle taxi drivers and market traders. Regarding the funds for this, she revealed that Japelidi members raised donations. Offline activities were carried out by the Japelidi team and residents by distributing leaflets, posters and banners at strategic places in many areas, such as Jakarta, Yogyakarta, Bali, Salatiga, Semarang, Lamongan, Malang, Bandung, Ponorogo, Depok, Surabaya, Sukabumi, Blora, Grobogan, Bogor, Banjarmasin, Kulonprogo, Gresik, Tegal, Wonogiri, Cilacap, Magelang, NTT, Kutai, NTB, Timika, Kab. Semarang, East Lombok, Lampung, and Samarinda. The coverage of this area is still increasing along with increasing community support.

“We did not expect the support from residents to be this big. Like political campaigns, health campaigns must also be carried out by land in many places. In my opinion, there are still a lot of unreachable regions, even though the issue of this pandemic is very urgent,” said Lestari Nurhajati, an LSPR lecturer who is the Coordinator of the Japelidi Campaign Against Covid-19 Hoaxes.
