Faculty of Philosophy Becomes Center for Student Character Development

Faculty of Philosophy becomes the host of three compulsory courses in UGM, including Pancasila, Civics, and Religion courses. Therefore, the Faculty of Philosophy plays an essential role in developing the student character.

“Faculty of Philosophy has held courses related to characters and personality such as religion, Pancasila, and civics since a long time ago. Thus, Faculty of Philosophy is suitable to become the Center for UGM student character development,” said UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., IPU, ASEAN Eng, on Thursday (11/6).

Panut said character and personality education becomes essential to prepare the students for establishing careers after graduating. Therefore, UGM keeps supporting Faculty of Philosophy as a Center for Character Development.

“Being successful in the working field is not only caused by a strong knowledge but also a good character and personality,” he added.

Dean of Faculty of Philosophy, Dr. Arqom Kuswanjono said that during the faculty’s compulsory courses, each class consists of students from various study programs; thus, knowledge transfer is expected to happen, and the students could get to know each other better.

“Faculty of Philosophy also invites Professors from various study programs to give lectures regarding UGM’s values, which consist of Pancasila and the identity of UGM,” said Arqom.

Besides, the Faculty of Philosophy also conducts training for the lecturers of Curriculum Compulsory Courses from many faculties to increase the learning methods and materials.

“Therefore, not only the students but also lecturers across the faculties can build relationships and positive discussions,” he said.

Previously, UGM Rector established the Faculty of Philosophy as an integrity zone within UGM. It is relevant to the integrity zone development program in 14 public universities, which was initiated by the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Education and Cultures.

The integrity zone development in 14 public universities was conducted in a specific faculty selected by the university’s rector. One of the program’s objectives is that each university could implement good and clean university management; thus, corruption, collusion, and nepotism practice could be eradicated.

Faculties that succeed in building integrity zones will receive the title of Clean Areas from Corruption (WBK) and Clean Serving Bureaucracy Areas (WBBM).
