Gadjah Mada University (UGM) are collaborating with the Puncak Papua regency government in the fields of education, research, and community service.
The agreement was marked by the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) by the Rector of UGM, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D. Eng., IPU., ASEAN.Eng., and the Regent of Puncak Papua Regency Government, Williem Wandik, SE., M.Sc., in the UGM Rector’s Reception Room, Monday (16/3).
Williem Wandik conveyed that Puncak Papua Regency has now made progress in the last few years. Various efforts were made to accelerate development, including the development of human resources in Puncak Papua. To accelerate the development of competitive human resources, his government provides scholarships for students of Puncak Papua to continue their studies in university.
“We provide many scholarships to the children of Puncak Papua to continue their studies in university. However, we really hope that some of them will be accepted to study at UGM, “he said.
Panut Mulyono said that UGM pays great attention to the education of young people from all over the country, including Papua. In addition to increasing access to education from underprivileged families and the 3T areas (frontier, outermost, underdeveloped), currently his team also continues to increase the allocation of student admissions from Eastern Indonesia through the affirmation route.
“UGM continues to try to add more students from eastern Indonesia and we will formulate it to make it even better in the future,” he explained.
He believes that in the future, Papua can become better and more prosperous. This will happen when Papuan children get better education.
“The hope is that by studying at UGM, they will not only obtain knowledge to develop the region, but also provide provisions to become a person with strong national values, also have strong empathy for the community and an entrepreneurial spirit to better develop their region,” he explained.
The signing of the MoU this time marks an extension of the cooperation that has been carried out between UGM and the Puncak Papua Regency Government. Previously, UGM through the Papua Task Force in collaboration with FISIPOL UGM Capacity Development and Cooperation Center (PPKK) has collaborated with the Puncak Papua Regency Government through the pioneering teacher program since 2013. This program, which was implemented by sending many teachers, was aimed at improving the quality of education as well as the quality of Papuan human resource.
