UGM Lecturers Make Portable Washbasin to Prevent Coronavirus

Based on his observations of various shopping centers and traditional markets were still crowded with people, increasing the risk of Covid-19 transmission, a lecturer of the Faculty of Engineering UGM, Dr. Jayan Sentanuhady, initiated producing portable hand wash basins or sinks. No different from the hand washing place we know, this portable sink is equipped with a running water tap and liquid soap. “I thought of people in the market at first. There is no way the market will be closed, many people are still coming (to markets). For me, as an engineering person, the thinking is simple, prevention is better and the cost is cheaper,” said Jayan, Tuesday (14/4).

Jayan said that he made the concept of this sink quite simple because it was enough to provide a container with 50 to 300 litres in size. The water is then flowed through the water tap. Meanwhile, the waste water is collected into the jerry can. “The point is to provide clean water and liquid soap as well as tissue in locations where there is no water source and locations that are in the center of a crowd,” he said.

According to him, this portable sink uses soap and is rinsed with running water so that it is expected to be able to prevent the transmission of the Covid-19 virus in various crowds. “The protein that covers the corona virus will be destroyed if it is exposed to an alkaline substance such as soap. So, you don’t need antiseptic soap or hand sanitizer or alcohol. It is enough to wash your hands with soap water,” he said.

Jayan said that his party is currently working on orders from several agencies to provide this portable hand wash. According to him, this sink can function from running water or electricity. The source of water flow is from filling water into a reservoir. “Even if it is far from a clean water source, it (clean water) can be delivered by vehicle (to the wash basin),” he said.

Currently, Jayan said, this portable sink manufacturing workshop is only working on one unit per day. Because, they are not only working on this one tool, he and his team are also developing other creative ideas in the form of tools needed by the hospitals in dealing with Covid-19 patients who are being treated. “We are also working on an air purifier for patient rooms, swab test chambers and ventilators,” he concluded.
