The condition of Indonesia’s forests has deteriorated and the amount of forest keeps declining over time. Forest Watch Indonesia (FWI) data records that in the 2009-2013 period the deforestation rate in Indonesia reached 1.13 million hectares per year.
“Many factors cause deforestation, one of which is illegal logging. This encourages us to innovate to design illegal logging detectors namely ILUTOR (Illegal Logging Detector),” explained Moch Sofiyulloh, developer of the detection equipment, Wednesday (19/6) at UGM.
The tool development was carried out by the UGM Forestry Faculty student along with Ari Febrian (Elins FMIPA) and Ahmad Zaini Pratama (Information Technology, FT). The three of them innovated to make ILUTOR through the Student Creativity Program in the field of UGM’s Cipta Karya.
Sofiyulloh explained that ILUTOR was made to detect illegal logging based on ESP32 microcontroller and Microphone MAX9814 as a sound detector for illegal logging in the area around the device. When illegal logging occurs, the tool will send a short message or short message system (SMS) to the Central Guard Central server number. Information sent via SMS includes the address where it happens, the value of noise, and the location of the latitude coordinates in the area where there is suspected noise of a chainsaw.
“This tool is also integrated with google maps so that it can be accessed easily,” he said.
Not only that, all logging history notes will be saved in the form of SMS and can be accessed if needed. This tool is also connected to the application they developed and has a notification feature of illegal logging, environmental campaigns, and other interesting content.
“This ILUTOR also upgrades the most basic function of power to light up. Using Hybrid batteries with solar panels and power banks as chargers makes this device last for about 2 weeks, “he explained.
He mentioned that this tool has the potential to be developed in various forest areas with several adaptations of adaptive solar panel power supply designs installed in the forest. This tool is also assembled with educational applications that provide information about illegal logging with related locations as well as some secondary information about the area.
