“Provide more than 60 free online courses powered by MOOC”
“Enlightening the nation’s life”, in line with the Constitution, UGM has supported the implementation of free courses through the Massive Open Online Program (MOOC). MOOC is a platform accessible to people who are not studying at the university. Many classes are divided into categories such as business, health, politics, digital transformation, etc divided into three model courses–public course, free course, and paid course. This implementation supported Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Strategic Plan 2022-2027 and the government rules in Permendikbud Ristek No.52 from 2023 about Quality Assurance in Higher Education.
At the faculty level, innovation in digital learning is equally prioritized. FISIPOL UGM has established the Digital Intelligence Class, a facility open to public with Artificial Intelligence (AI) as its central theme. The program is designed in three progressive stages—introductory, continuous learning, and transformation—allowing learners to grasp concepts more effectively. Alongside this, the FISIPOL UGM Online Campus (FOCUS) provides a versatile learning platform, further expanding UGM’s outreach to both students and the broader community. It is inline with the government programme due to Merdeka Belajar .
Awards


Integrated Research and Testing Laboratory (LPPT) UGM provides various trainings that are free of charge or funded as a form of grant from other institutions. LPPT UGM received an award from the Indonesian Minister of Health for the best laboratory category in genetic surveillance testing. LPPT collaborates with a team from FKKMK UGM to analyse samples either by using PCR or genomically with Next Generation Sequencing (NGS).
Indonesia’s Pioneer of Intellectual Movement
As the pioneer of knowledge exchange, regularly collaborates with experts, policymakers, and communities to spark dialogue on pressing national and global issues. The Masjid Kampus UGM pPublic Lecture (MPL) series stands as a vibrant platform where economic, political, and social themes are unpacked for the public. From addressing Indonesia’s developmental challenges in Dilemma Indonesia Menuju Negara Maju. Hundreds of participants from a variety of backgrounds joined this event. A previous lecture was also hosted at MPL in collaboration with academics, education activists, and policymakers to discuss teacher welfare, infrastructure, and education governance. On other occasions, MPL invited the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, to discuss political identity. These programs show that the MPL is concerned about education and that anyone can access it for free.
UGM’s intellectual movement is also visible on the global stage. In collaboration with the United Nations Observance of International Women’s Day, UGM amplified the cause of gender equality through events that connect local and global perspectives. At the regional level, the Faculty of Pharmacy partnered with Universiti Sains Malaysia to discuss pharmaceutical innovations using drug delivery systems and herbal medicine. Similarly, the Research Center of Biotechnology hosted Japan’s NAIST Center for Digital Green-Innovation to highlight plant science research for the green economy. Meanwhile, the UGM Preneurs General Lecture, organized with PT Bawa Indonesia Global, featured speakers from PT Freeport Indonesia and Komunal Fintech-Neo Rural Bank, empowering SMEs to embrace transformation and growth.
Driving Innovation, Health, and Digital Transformation for a Sustainable Future
UGM is able to share knowledge and perspectives on diverse topics. In the Health Care and Industry and Digitalisation, for example. The Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at the regional level participated in the 2023 ASEAN Higher Education Conference (AHEC). It raised the topic “Post COVID Sustainable Health Care and Industry,” which is relevant and related to the development of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the world. Indonesia led the agenda, and Prof. dr. Ova, the Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, was the keynote speaker. The concerned about digitalisation conducted by the Center for Transportation and Logistics Studies (Pustral) UGM held the Digital Supply Network to identify the role of stakeholders in fulfilling the needs of implementing digital supply networks in Indonesia. The concern about Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reinforced with collaboration between the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) and Indonesia’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation (KORIKA) through the AI 101: Potential and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Various Sectors. Some faculty concerned about digitalisation, such as the Faculty of Biology held through the seminar on Open Science and AI Technology. Besides students and researchers, participants come from many different backgrounds such as conservation and biology practitioners. Technology was also the focus of the national seminar held by the Faculty of Agriculture on the Implementation of Smart Eco-Bioproduction. This technology is being developed to increase food safety and enhance plant disease diagnostics.
Campus believe that the role of higher education reaching the SDGs requires research to accelerate the implementation process. UGM held a discussion on “The Role of Applied Research in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals” and invited several policy makers in the vocational field to attend. Among participants were students from universities across Indonesia, such as Universitas Sebelas Maret, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, etc. The discussion was divided into 4 focuses: Sociohumanities, Science and Technology, Agrotechnology, and Health clusters. It highlighted the importance of innovation and togetherness to achieve the SDGs goals.
At the faculty level, the Faculty of Engineering and Agricultural Technology organized their seminars to discuss technology in different fields. The Faculty of Engineering organized a seminar on the Professional Engineer Study Program which aims to share knowledge and experience and improve the quality of engineering. Similarly, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology held the “8th International Conference – Indonesian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria and Gut Microbiota”. Researchers and students presented their papers, as well as representatives from big companies such as PUI-PT Probiotik, PT Royal Medicalink Pharmalab, and PT Yakult Indonesia Persada. Both of the seminars show that UGM trying to maximize their concern at the faculty level depends on their specialization issues.
Fostering Public Prosperity Through Vocational Initiatives
The Faculty of Medicine approached another way through the Center for Tropical Medicine UGM (CTR). TDR was proposed as a pilot scheme to incorporate a research grant into the MOOC Implementation Research (IR) training course. This enables participants in SEAR countries who have developed sound research letters of intent to put these research ideas into practice. They also share the idea through Tropmed Talk, it is similar to podcasts and makes it easier for the audience.
The health clusters offer a lot of courses and training. The collaboration between The Department of Histology and Cell Biology, Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing, UGM, was conducting an ELISA and Flowcytometry Analysis Course. Enzyme Linked Immunosorbent Assay (ELISA) is a quantitative analysis method which shows antigen-antibody reaction through colour change obtained by using enzyme-linked conjugates and enzyme substrates. The use of specific machines was also supported by the Faculty of Dentistry though 3-Dimensional Printing Technique Training for Biomedical Applications, in 2022. This three-dimensional (3D) printing machine was originally used for biomedical dentistry during a “Kedaireka” Matching Fund scheme.
Learning and Development Center (LDC) is a sub-unit managed by the Directorate of Human Resources of UGM. It has been providing human development training since 2012. LDC UGM focuses on the development of Human Resources within the UGM internal environment and from government agencies, the private sector, the community, and other stakeholders. The main objective of LDC UGM is to improve employees’ abilities, knowledge, and skills to be more effective and productive. For example, employees receive training on host and protocol.
The Center for Transportation and Logistics Studies (PUSTRAL) annually organised a Geographic Information System (GIS) training program and recently held the 17th batch of Basic GIS (GIS) Training. Those who wish to improve their mastery of GIS can improve their skills by attending this program. In 2023, PUSTRAL also organised the Remote Pilot and Unmanned Aircraft System Operation Training for Mapping Batch 14 Year 2023. In the last three years, they managed the 3rd Batch of Spatial and Network Analysis (SNA) Training.
This programme covered two different types of agendas. The first agenda is the Distribution Training Batch 1, and the second one is the Transportation Planning and Modeling Training Batch 1. Both agendas aim to support the quality of transportation.
The University also supports the Programmed Training for Executives and Certified from the Center for Environmental Studies (PSLH) related to Environmental Impact Analysis (AMDAL). PSLH held the 176th Basic EIA Training to support the government rules in Undang-Undang Nomor 32 Tahun 2009 about Environmental Protection and Management. In another agenda, PSLH held the opening of the EIA Appraisal training for Batch 89. The participants came from the private sector. They also managed the 28th Environmental Auditor & 24th Environmental Management and Monitoring Reporting (EMPR).
The University also supports the Programmed Training for Executives and is Certified by the Vocational Development Center (VDC). VDC organised the Certification of Marketing Communication Training to transfer knowledge about the strategy of marketing and communication in creative ways. In order to support online facilitation, they arranged to Optimize Google Work Space for Administration Training.
Bridging Knowledge, Empowering Communities:More than 7.000 students joined the KKN PPM from 19 faculties spreading to serve 31 provinces, 97 districts, 204 sub-districts, and more than 400 villages across Indonesia.
The university has arranged many Community Service Programs (KKN). There were many programmes related to sustainability, such as Waste Sorting Education and Ecoprint Making in Labuhan Pandan Village to support Zero Waste, learning eco-printing and electrical experiments in four academic levels starting from the Elementary School, the Junior, and Senior High School level, solved the health issues by suggest the theme about non-communicable diseases, infectious diseases, child health in the Pajangan village, arranged socialisation of clean and healthy living behaviour (PHBS) at the elementary school level, conducting environmental education to support sustainability Life Below Water for children on the Parangkusumo beach through Green Generation Programme, and created “Pekan Edukasi” at the elementary school level in Ternate City.
The university arranged education outreach activities through community services. One of the programmes was a collaboration between the Faculty of Dentistry and Psychology in SLB (Special School) 1 Bantul through DENTAL HERO to improve Oral Hygiene. This collaboration was carried out to provide assistance to dental and oral health cadres, including “Dental Hero,” which consists of students, teachers, and parents. This activity encourages SLB Negeri 1 Bantul students to brush their teeth. The series of activities that have been carried out are socialisation, training, and cadre independence. Another programme arranged by the Community Inspired Gadjah Mada (GM) beyond the Community Social Affairs Ministry of BEM KM UGM organised a Children’s Festival titled “Exploring Culture: Harmony in Diverse National Cultures” at the elementary school level in Sleman.
The program that aims at the elementary school level was numerous for sustainability. They arrange the “Kampung Ramah Anak” programme with local principles such as Engklek Pintar, Pojok Pintar, Character Class, and Inspired Class. The Faculty of Engineering held the “Cinta Anak Negeri” (CAN) to help the children’s education in Kulon Progo. On the other hand, the university also supported SMEs through the Strengthening the Capacity of Student Organizations programme arranged by the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences.
