The Disaster Response Unit (DERU) of UGM distributed aid to handle the Covid-19 pandemic in the Special Region of Yogyakarta (DIY). Head of Sub-directorate of Community Empowerment Dit. PKM UGM, Nanung Agus F., said this distribution was aimed at various independent shelters at the village level.
“This PPE assistance should help the Covid-19 task force in each area, including for funerals with the covid protocols, as well as assistance for residents undergoing self-isolation,” said Nanung when contacted by UGM PR on Friday (9/7).
From 8 June to Friday (9/7), DERU has distributed protective equipment (PPE) with details of 1,298 hazmats and 13 mattresses. The aid has been distributed to shelters in Sumbermulyo, Trimulyo, Tirtonirmolo Village, Wukirsari, Wirokerten, Jambidan, Jotawang, Pendowoharjo Village Bantul, Trirenggo, Karangtengah, Sendangtirto, Trimurti, Murtigading, Banguntapan District, including to the shelters of UII, and LazisNU DIY.
Responding to the surge in Covid-19 cases, since 1 July 2021, the DIY Government and other stakeholders have prepared several shelters as places of isolation for Covid-19 survivors. As of 6 July, the DIY Government had prepared 77 shelters jointly with the DIY Provincial Government and the Regency and City Governments, universities, and community organizations. These shelters are known to have reached the village level.
The head of the DIY Provincial Social Service, Endang Patmintarsih, reported that each of the 59 shelters prepared by the regional government can accommodate 10 to 60 Covid-19 survivors. The shelters use various buildings owned by the district government, health centers, and schools in the village.
As of 8 July 2021, the number of confirmed positive cases in Yogyakarta increased by 1,424 people, bringing the number of confirmed cases so far to 70,894. Sleman has the highest number of additional cases with 423 cases, followed by Yogyakarta with 372 cases, Gunung Kidul Regency with 264 cases, Bantul Regency with 240 cases, and lastly Kulon Progo with 125 cases.
