Universities play a role in the development of resources and technology. To achieve a world-class level, universities also need to consider an environmentally friendly campus or eco-campus.
In the keynotes speech at the Webinar Step Up to Succeed The Green Campus with Solar Energy on Thursday (24/6), the Director-General of Higher Education, Prof. Nizam, explained the need to encourage campuses to Build a Green Indonesia.
This can start from the energy-saving movement by using solar panels, establishing green buildings, and developing various biofuels. The potential use of biofuel on campus is good not only to save energy but also for scientific development.
“Education and research play an important role in building a culture of energy saving through joint mastery of science and technology,” explained Nizam.
Responding to this Prof. Panut Mulyono, UGM Chancellor, explained that UGM has always had a concern for a green campus by planting plants and using various renewable energies. UGM also conserves water to make efficient water use on campus and suitable arrangement and choice of vegetation.
“In addition, we also use bicycles on campus, electric vehicles, installed solar panels in various buildings, and use biopori which can accommodate rainwater, as well as a water integration system that aims to maximize the water benefits,” he said.
Currently, there are 4 buildings installed at UGM with solar panels. UGM collaborates with Pertamina for this installation. UGM assesses that the use of solar panels is the most convenient technology to use considering the current condition of UGM.
“Currently, UGM has received five green building certificates in new buildings, one of which is the use of solar panels, good air circulation, and the use of building materials. The goal is to save electricity,” explained Panut.
UGM involves various researchers and building experts to create environmentally friendly, energy-efficient building plans when designing new buildings.
