UGM Trains Yogyakarta-Central Java Farmer Groups to Cultivate Silver Rasbora

The Gama Wader Team of the Faculty of Biology UGM provides training to cultivate silver rasbora fish (wader pari) of which have high economic value to farmer groups in various regions of Yogyakarta and Central Java.

The silver rasbora cultivation training was attended by representatives of farmer groups scattered in several regions in Yogyakarta and Central Java, such as Yogyakarta, Sleman, Bantul, Gunungkidul, and Klaten. It was held at KPI Santan Mina Lestari, located at Pasar Ikan Segar (Fresh Fish Market), Maguwoharjo, Sleman, on a limited basis and applied strict health protocols.

Dr. Bambang Retnoaji, M.Sc., the Gama Wader Team trustee and Head of the Doctoral Program in Biology, opened the training, Wednesday (6/1). He said it aimed to educate the community on silver rasbora cultivation.

Bagas Lantip Prakasa, M.Sc., the Gama Wader Team coordinator, added that the training included a brief explanation of silver rasbora cultivation and the practice of selecting/sorting adult and immature or fertile and infertile broodstock.

Besides, it also taught the participants how to separate male and female broodstock. Participants were invited to practice direct spawning, both in mass spawning ponds and semi-mass spawning ponds. They also practiced collecting fish eggs, transferring the silver rasbora larvae, and rearing the fish.

“We distribute 1-month-old silver rasbora seeds to all participants. Hopefully, fish farmers will be more enthusiastic in cultivating silver rasbora and can influence other fish farmer groups,” he explained.

Bagas added that the fish could be in harvest after two to three months. The silver rasbora cultivation results in fish selling and various processed products such as chili sauce and fish chips. In the cultivation project, his party also collaborates with several MSME partners to process the harvest. PLN’s (State Electricity Enterprise) CSR (Corporate Social Responsibility) program “PLN Peduli” also supports this project.
