Workbikecycle for Sports and Working

The Primary Service Educational Forum (WPLP UGM), the UGM bicycle repair shop, and the Vocational School have developed a prototype of workbikecycle. It is a modified bicycle that can be used to exercise as well as work.

The energy arising from pedaling a bicycle can also be converted into electrical energy, used for electronic equipment for working such as laptops.

“Combining work with a laptop along with pedaling a bicycle will make exercise sufficient and prevent the emergence of risk factors that cause Covid-19 and keep production at work optimal,” said Dr. dr. Wahyudi Istiono, M.Kes., WPLP manager who is also the initiator of the development of this tool on Wednesday (30/12).

This tool was developed in early September supported by the Directorate of Assets UGM, Vice-Rector for Human Resources and Assets, and partners from Blora Smart Asset. Currently, there are three prototypes in the Korpagama Clinic, which have been used by several patients and clinic staff who need them.

He explained that the idea of making this bicycle emerged as an effort to reduce the risk factors for health decline in UGM community members who were triggered by lack of exercise and stress due to work. Many UGM academics, he explained, have diseases such as hypertension, diabetes, heart problems, kidney disorders, movement disorders, and others.

“The idea arose out of concern for patients, the academic community, and the bicycle trend in a pandemic situation. Many elderly patients have comorbid illnesses, and many of these people have died during the Covid pandemic,” he explained.

The Covid-19 pandemic also poses new challenges in exercising because people, especially seniors who are more susceptible to virus transmission, are no longer free to exercise. Another problem is the difficulty of finding time to exercise due to work that is quite time-consuming.

Wistono explained that combining work and exercise time could overcome limited exercise time and space during the pandemic.

“Hopefully, the academic community is healthy, working a lot, and wealthy. By combining work time and exercise in a limited space, getting work done, exercising right, increasing immunity, and preventing stress and risk factors for stroke, hypertension, diabetes, and heart problems,” he added.

The Primary Service Education Forum, with the task of coordinating all UGM clinical services, also provides primordial prevention services for catastrophic diseases, namely non-communicable diseases with high mortality rates, in collaboration with various related parties.

In line with the development of this innovation, it is planned to monitor users’ health with the cardiac team from the UGM Academic Hospital. It follows the WPLP’s strategic plan to prevent primordial non-communicable diseases and prevent exposure to Covid-19 for at-risk academics.

In addition to static bicycles, another ongoing prototype is a dynamic bicycle equipped with solar panels to produce electrical energy that can be used for various activities.

These two tools will be developed to meet the needs of working in the office or at home or for those who want to do outdoor activities.
