Smokers Have Higher Risk of Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is generally found in elderly. However, this disease can affect anyone, including young people.

“Everyone has a risk of osteoporosis,” explained an orthopedic specialist at UGM Academic Hospital, dr. Lutfi Hidayat. Sp.OT (K) Hip Knee, in a Health Talkshow entitled Recognize and Prevent Osteoporosis, held online, on Thursday (10/12).

Luthfi said various factors influence osteoporosis. One of them is due to an unhealthy lifestyle.

He gave an example of a habit that can trigger osteoporosis is smoking. Besides having a harmful impact on heart and lung health, smoking can also cause osteoporosis. The substances contained in cigarettes, such as nicotine, can inhibit the production of bone-forming cells.

“In those who smoke, the effect is quite tolerable. If you have a broken bone, it will take longer to heal/connect, and the risk of the bone not connecting is also greater,” he explained.

In addition, other habits such as alcohol consumption can affect bone health and increase the risk of osteoporosis. Next, the lazy habit of exercising or doing physical activity. Lack of physical activity/exercise can increase the risk of osteoporosis.

“Exercise is good for strengthening bones, but it should also be noted that not all physical activity is good for bone density,” he said.

Besides lifestyle, some other factors such as a low calcium diet, family/genetic history, and a thin and small person are also at high risk of developing osteoporosis. Then, women are more at risk of osteoporosis due to menopause. Likewise, people with metabolic disorders, diabetes, kidney disorders, and autoimmune diseases are more susceptible to osteoporosis.

“The prevention is to change your lifestyle to be healthier and try always to be active. If you have been exposed to treatment with calcium,” he explained.

Meanwhile, a specialist in physical medicine and medical rehabilitation at UGM Academic Hospital, dr. Guritno Adistyawan, Sp.KFR., said that one way to prevent osteoporosis is by exercising because exercise can maintain bone density.

Gurtino said that a good exercise to prevent osteoporosis is weight-bearing. This type of exercise is done by moving against gravity in an upright standing position. Some of them such as brisk walking, jogging, jumping, and others.

“All types of sports that are carried out need to be ascertained with their respective conditions,” he said.

In people with osteoporosis and the elderly, he continued, the exercise should be minimally burdensome to the bones because people with osteoporosis are prone to fractures.

He gave an example of sports that can be done: walking, standing, doing daily activities such as sweeping, carrying groceries, and others. Avoid high-impact sports such as jumping because it can increase the risk of fractures.

“With such physical activity, the bones have received a stimulus,” he said.
