Swab Test Alternative for Covid-19 Detection: GeNose by UGM

UGM is ready to launch the latest innovation “GeNose”, a tool for detecting and diagnosing Covid-19 by analyzing a human breath. “GeNose” works to quickly and accurately detect Volatile Organic Compound (VOC) which is formed due to the Covid-19 infection that comes out with a person’s breath. People’s breaths are sensed through sensors and then the data is processed with the help of artificial intelligence for detection and decision making. “GeNose” is designed to be very handy so that it can be operated independently and efficiently.

“GeNose” is the first innovation in Indonesia for Covid-19 detection through the breath. The tool is connected to a cloud computing system to obtain real-time diagnosis results. Remarkably, “GeNose” can also work in parallel through a centralized diagnosis process in the system so that data validity can be maintained for all connected devices. The data collected in the system can then be used for mapping, tracking and monitoring the actual spread of the pandemic.

The “GeNose” profiling test (calibration) was carried out using 600 valid data samples at the Bhayangkara Hospital and the Covid Bambanglipuro Special Field Hospital in Yogyakarta. The results showed a high level of accuracy, namely 97 percent. Furthermore, “GeNose” enters the stage of diagnostic testing (clinical trials) which will be carried out in stages and spread across several hospitals in Indonesia. The reliability of the tools, the accuracy of the data, and the validity of the methods applied are expected to increase the confidence of end-users to immediately adopt the “GeNose” application for the benefit of the wider community.

GeNose is built together with the spirit of cooperation including a team of experts across fields of science at UGM as follows: Dr. Eng. Kuwat Triyana, M.Si (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences); Dr. Dian Kesumapramudya Nurputra (Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing); Dr. Ahmad Kusumaatmaja (Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences); Dr. Mohamad Saifudin Hakim (Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing) and strategic industry partners who are committed to producing campus research and innovation results. It is hoped that GeNose can immediately be used to help handle Covid-19 before the end of 2020.
