Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM), ITB, and IPB are members of an interdisciplinary scientific consortium with several universities in the UK that receive support from the Indonesian and British governments. UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., said the consortium would focus on research and expertise to build the country’s resilience to global pandemics and climate emergencies and natural disasters. However, this consortium will be open and inclusive in terms of issues and disciplines. “This consortium encourages real work in contributing so that it can have an impact on the community,” said the Rector on Thursday (27/8).
UGM Rector mentioned several universities in the United Kingdom involved in this consortium, including the University of Nottingham, the University of Warwick, and Coventry University. The UKICIS or UK-Indonesia Consortium for Interdisciplinary Sciences can be a driving force for the exchange and dissemination of knowledge and technology transfer between Indonesia and the UK over the next 25 years. “Through this consortium, we want to strengthen relations in the fields of education, economy, and Indonesian-English culture through various activities and engagement with the community,” he explained.
While Dr. Bagus Muljadi, Assistant Professor in Chemical and Environmental Engineering at the University of Nottingham, who is also UKICIS Coordinator, said that members of this consortium of universities would discuss food security and global public health. “Global resilience will be explored from various interdisciplinary perspectives by UKICIS members,” he said.
Other issues, according to Bagus, that are no less important are the business recovery strategy after the financial crisis and policy resilience amid social and economic changes due to the shocks of the pandemic.
