Humanitarian Transportation, Transportation Post Covid-19 Pandemic

Four universities: Gadjah Mada University, the University of Indonesia, the Bandung Institute of Technology and the Surabaya Institute of Technology have collaborated with the Research and Development Center (Balitbang) of the Indonesian Ministry of Transportation. The collaboration that was carried out online on Tuesday afternoon (2/6) was attended by four chancellors simultaneously.

The collaboration between the Ministry of Transportation through the Research and Development Agency with academics from these four universities was aimed to seek input in preparing policies in the transportation sector to welcome a New Normal situation. The resulting policies will be implemented after the Covid-19 pandemic.

UGM Rector, Prof. Ir. Panut Mulyono, M.Eng., D.Eng., IPU, ASEAN Eng., welcomes this cooperation. Because according to him, after the Covid-19 pandemic, Indonesia was faced with several options related to humanitarian considerations in transportation and economic life.

“Indonesia is of course faced with several policy options that must be chosen thoroughly and carefully,” he said.

Several options offered by UGM include: First, economic recovery is prioritized but will have a sensitive impact from a humanitarian point of view. The second option is humanitarian missions as priority but has a sensitive impact from the economic recovery point of view, and the third option is to prioritize human values for a better economy.

The options, said the chancellor, were summarized from a series of activities through webinars conducted by UGM Pustral since the beginning of the Covid-19 pandemic which was attended by various groups of stakeholders in the transportation sector from all parts of Indonesia.

“Taking into account the facts in the field and the opinions of higher education experts in the fields of engineering, social, public health, economy, territory and culture, UGM would suggest a review that balances aspects of human values and better economic sustainability,” he said.

Based on this, he added, UGM is open to collaborate with Balitbang Kemenhub in conducting joint research with the title of changing the behavior of transportation operations that prioritizes human values for a better economy. A cooperation that leads to humanitarian transportation.

“UGM strongly supports the hope of the Minister of Transportation who is collaborating with 4 universities, namely UGM, UI, ITB and ITS to place the transportation sector as a service of human values for a better economy,” he said.

After the signing of the cooperation, the event continued with a discussion themed Collaboration in Responding to the Impact of the Covid-19 Pandemic and Recovery Strategies on a New Normal Life Order in the Transportation Sector. The four universities expressed their opinions regarding land, sea and air transportation modes after the Covid-19 pandemic.

On this occasion, UGM, through experts at the Center for Transportation and Logistics Studies, conveyed thoughts related to changes in the behavior of the transportation sector to prioritize human values for a better economy.

Prof. Dr. Ir. Agus Taufik Mulyono, S.T., M.T., IPU., ASEAN. Eng as the Head of UGM Pustral stated that the impact of the pandemic and the PSBB policy on the resilience and sustainability of the operator transportation and travel behavior sector, the regulations that need to be developed are studies that have a socio-economic impact during the Covid-19 pandemic on the railroad transportation business. It is also necessary to study models and strategies for the recovery of the railroad transportation business after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“UGM’s proposal is in the form of a review on the role of railroad transportation to accelerate the distribution of humanitarian logistics in the form of food based on pandemic disasters,” said Prof. Agus Taufik Mulyono, Professor of DTSL FT UGM, Head of UGM Pustral and Chair of the Indonesian Transportation Society.

Meanwhile, in relation to the logistics service industry recovery model and strategy after the Covid-19 pandemic, he continued, UGM proposed a humanitarian transportation study by prioritizing humanity for a better economic life in anticipating the New Normal condition.
