A total of 43 students from Japan, Taiwan, Romania and Indonesia participated in a summer course on gender and vulnerable groups in supporting disaster risk reduction organized by the Faculty of Medicine, Public Health and Nursing (FKKMK) UGM in collaboration with the Kobe Unesco Chair on Gender and Vulnerability in Disaster Risk Reduction Support, Japan.
Deputy Dean for Academic and Student Affairs FKKMK, Prof. dr. Gandes Retno Rahayu, M.Med.Ed., Ph.D, said the summer course activities will be held for ten days from 19 to 28 August. This course was the second time it was held and attended by students from Japan, Taiwan and Indonesia. “This course emphasizes the importance of implementing integrated disaster risk management,” said Gandes on Tuesday (20/8) at the UGM FKKMK Campus.
She added that the participation of students in this course was to gain new knowledge and experience to increase their capacity and competence related to disaster management in professional and multi-disciplinary ways. “Various activities both in the classroom and in the field have been designed in a simulation model to bring them closer to the real situation of disaster management. Not to mention, various skills and science in disaster management will be presented by expert speakers,” she said.
One of the summer course committees, Alenda Dwiadila, said that the participants will receive a general lecture in class for five days and do a field visit starting from meeting with BPBD Sleman, and having dialogues with disaster response communities in Kemadang Village, Tanjungsari, Gunungkidul. “In the field they collect data in studying case studies of disasters,” she said.
This activity will also be attended by 14 lecturers from UGM, Kobe University, Japan, Gothenburg University, Sweden, representatives from Unesco Jakarta, and researchers from the UGM Center for Natural Disaster Studies.
