UGM Students Create Application for Evaluating Driver Behavior to Prevent Traffic Accidents

UGM students developed an application to reduce the number of traffic accidents named D’BOS.

The application can assess the driver’s behavior so as to prevent accidents that might occur, designed by utilizing an accelerometer and GPS on a smart phone. This tool has the ability to measure the acceleration of forces and changes in position that occur.

“With this tool an index of driver behavior values can be obtained such as driving with aggressive acceleration, zig-zag moves, and driving speed limits,” explained Adrian Rose Jayanto, one of D’BOS developers on Saturday (6/22) at UGM.

D’BOS also supports efficient use of fuel through its eco-driving calculation feature. Through real-time integration with the administrator, this application can be used for partners such as online motorcycle taxis and police officers to assess employee performance, driver’s license exams, and also personal evaluations of users.

Adrian said that the development of this application was motivated by concerns about the high number of traffic accidents in the country. Data from the Institute of Transportation Studies (INSTRAN) records the trend of traffic accidents nationwide each year. In 2009 the agency recorded around over 140 thousand traffic accidents which caused more than 20 thousand deaths, 40 thousand serious injuries, and 80 thousand minor injuries.

“It is hoped that with this application installed on motorists’ cellphones the number of traffic accidents due to negligence can be reduced,” explained the Engineering student.

The development of D’BOS was carried out by Adrian together with his fellow faculty members, Wisnu Kurniawan and Virginia Putri Mori under the guidance of Eka Firmansyah, S.T., M.Eng, Ph.D. The project was done for the Student Creativity Program in the field of Karsa Cipta 2019 and managed to get development grants from the Directorate General of Higher Education, Ministry of Research and Technology.
