Students of Nature Lovers at Universitas Gadjah Mada (Mapagama) conducted an exploration entitled “Putri Tanah Minang Expedition” in Pinaga Village, West Pasaman Regency, West Sumatra on 17 to 27 April 2019.
All of the teams sent by Mapagama on the expedition were women. The team consisted of 12 students from Mapagama members and 1 student from the UGM international program.
They are Demetria Alika P (Forestry, 2018), Aloysiana Intan OD (Cultural Studies, 2018), Nur Rima R (Social and Political Sciences, 2018), Linasari (Vocational School, 2018), Deswita Ayu Wandira (Cultural Studies, 2017), Alfira Ihda (Vocational School, 2017), Rahayu Septiningsih (Vocational School, 2016), Alfia Municha (Cultural Studies, 2016), Mayang Sari (Philosophy, 2016), Hajar Lutviah (Forestry, 2015), Eva Lutvi Atur N (Social and Political Sciences), Chordya Iswanti (Agriculture) and Miranda Ellen Lucas (Cultural Studies, 2018).
“Celebrating the Kartini Day, we make this moment an event to show the existence of women in community service and nature-related activities,” explained the expedition team coordinator, Deswita Ayu, in a release received on Thursday (25/4).
She mentioned that in this expedition they did community service and educational projects at the 21 Pasaman Elementary School and the community around the foot of Mount Talamau via Pinaga. The Mapagama team provides education about love for the environment and reproductive health.
“We conduct an educational project related to reproductive health because access to information on reproductive health here is still very minimal, along with the opinion that discussing reproductive health is still considered taboo by the community,” she said.
Apart from community service activities, the Kartini Mapagama UGM team also climbed Mount Talamau. This mountain is the highest roof in West Sumatra and has the most caldera in Indonesia. In this climb, the team tried to stay consistent by implementing ‘less waste’, which was also applied in the previous year when climbing Mount Latimojong in South Sulawesi.
The application of less waste means not using items that produce plastic waste that is difficult to decompose. All use environmentally friendly containers that are non-disposable and easily biodegradable.
“Coming from the awareness and real action carried out by ourselves as well as a persuasive step for other nature activists to reduce the use of items that produce plastic waste in adventurous activities”, he concluded.
