The Ethical Management and Strengthening Integrity (EMSI) program is a web-based educational platform which works to maintain, develop, and institutionalize ethical and integrity standards within UGM (http://mepi.ugm.ac.id/). It aims to promote behavioral expectations in any education-related work fields. EMSI’s major areas of focus include:
- Compliance and ethical standards
EMSI promotes ethical standards of behavior among all members of UGM through text modules, audiovisuals, and short videos. From 2018 to 2019, we have offered 12 course modules as follows: (1) use of animals in research, (2) plagiarism, (3) responsible community services, (4) conflicts of conscience and commitment, (5) conflicts of interest, (6) clinical and laboratory ethics, (7) research ethics involving human subjects in natural sciences, (8) research ethics involving human subjects in humanities and social sciences, (9) campus radicalism, (10) sexual harassment, (11) substance abuse, and (12) alcohol consumption.
- Protection and care of the students’ bodies
MEPI focuses on efforts to reduce or prevent risks related to sexual harassment, drugs, and alcohol consumption. Through this program, EMSI equips students with decision-making skills through education, guidance and motivation.
The target user of EMSI is not limited to members of UGM, but it extends to the public and parties who may require special needs to tackle ethical and integrity problems within their professional environments. These parties include universities, vocational institutions, schools, government units, and private organizations or companies. EMSI has been designed as a component that underlies training and learning programs carried out by external organizations or groups, and those who have been involved in these programs are considered users or learners of EMSI. In this way, we hope to reduce ethical crisis and achieve ethical excellence in the campus environment that could reach the wider community.
