Integrating Sustainability into Academia: UGM’s Commitment to SDG-Focused Degree Programs and Electives

1. Master’s Program in Technology for Sustainable Development

   In the Technology for Sustainable Development programme, UGM has a master programme to support the improvement of the quality of human life. Environmental problems caused by the rapid increase in global population and industrialisation, as well as the impact of global climate change, are crucial issues to be studied.
2. Master of Extension and Development Communication

   The experts produced by the Master of Extension and Development Communication Study Programme will be able to increase the use of information, community empowerment, actively participate and provide solutions to problems in the community development process and services to obtain direct economic benefits. In the end, increased prosperity and community welfare can be realised.
3. ASEAN Master in Sustainability Management

   UGM also provided master’s programmes to solve any sustainable and environmental issues especially in ASEAN region that span various domains. Against this backdrop, Universitas Gadjah Mada, Indonesia, together with ASEAN University Network (AUN) and University of Agder, Norway, now offer a collaborative MBA program that brings together various academic and practical perspectives to engage with pressing sustainability challenges.
4. Master Program of Environmental Science

   To achieve sustainable development, the development process must be considered in relation to the effect it has on the environment, through the promotion of an environmental ethic. The term ‘sustainable development’ refers to Agenda 21, which calls for attention to be given to environmental issues, by taking into account the social, economic, and cultural aspects of natural resource management, including bio-component diversities and other natural resources. To respond to these issues, the Environmental Science Study Program at Universitas Gadjah Mada is using a geographical ecology approach which integrates the physical, biological and socio-cultural aspects of the environment. There are some study interests such as environmental science, environmental management, geo-information for spatial planning and disaster risk management, and technology for sustainable development.

   UGM has and continues to strengthen its commitment to be part of solving the problems of the nation and the world, including through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) programme. Courses that have Sustainability content or nature are courses that have a focus or are related to the theme of sustainability / sustainable development (S / SD). This theme can include the concept/theoretical basis of S/SD; poverty reduction, improvements in food, health, or education; gender equality; improving the quality of clean water and sanitation; renewable and affordable energy; decent work/economic growth, industry, innovation and infrastructure; reducing inequality; sustainable cities and communities, responsible production and consumption, addressing climate change, improving marine and terrestrial ecosystems, peace and justice, and partnerships to achieve sustainable development goals.
6. Master Program of Peace and Conflict Resolution

   Universitas Gadjah Mada established the Master of Peace and Conflict Resolution Programme in February 2000. The programme is the first of its kind in Indonesia and in Southeast Asia. The programme is motivated by the challenges in realising a democratic and peaceful society. Conflicts have occurred at various levels of society between groups, in industrial relations, and in centre-periphery relations. These developments underscore the need for high-quality and innovative education in the field of conflict resolution and management, especially the analysis of the causes of vertical and horizontal conflicts.
7. Doctoral Program of Performing Arts and Visual Arts Studies

   The Graduate School of Universitas Gadjah Mada preserves cultural studies through the study of cultural phenomena using multidisciplinary perspectives. Cultural preservation aims to maintain local culture supported by various ethnicities, religions, and acculturation with other cultural systems. This extraordinary cultural wealth requires contemplation and research to spur the nation’s mental and spiritual development.
8. Master Program of Geo-information for Spatial Planning and Disaster Risk Management

   Universitas Gadjah Mada preserves a master program of Geo-information for Spatial Planning and Disaster Risk Management to respond to the wide range and variety of disasters in Indonesia. Natural disaster management capabilities and limited knowledge can be filled by these sciences.
