Free Event - General Public Lecture
The university hosts multiple free-access events through general public lectures, webinars, and seminars/workshops.
Public lectures at UGM often involve collaborating with experts to develop and discuss a wide range of issues. The university hosted a discussion regarding economic development and the environment in the Masjid Kampus UGM Public Lecture (MPL), with the title Dilemma Indonesia Menuju Negara Maju. Hundreds of participants from a variety of backgrounds joined this event. A previous lecture was also hosted at MPL in collaboration with academics, education activists, and policymakers to discuss teacher welfare, infrastructure, and education governance. On other occasions, MPL invited the Coordinating Minister for Political, Legal, and Security Affairs, Mahfud MD, to discuss political identity. These programs show that the MPL is concerned about education and that anyone can access it for free.
The Faculty of Social and Political Sciences has also shown similar initiatives in providing free education for the public. In collaboration with The United Nations Observance of International Women’s Day, the topic raised at the event was gender equality. It promotes the UN women’s program globally and at the local level. At the regional level, the Faculty of Pharmacy collaborates with Universiti Sains Malaysia. Hundreds of audience members were present to discuss drug delivery systems and herbal plants with the aim to develop pharmaceutical science innovations that meet social demands.
On behalf of UGM, the Research Center of Biotechnology invited the Director of the NAIST Center for Digital Green-Innovation (CDG) from Japan to deliver a public lecture about plant science research with a view to contributing to the green economy. The event was free for the public to access. The Faculty of Agricultural Techonology held a public lecture that helped to upgrade the potential of Small and Medium Enterprises (SMEs) through the “UGM Preneurs General Lecture”. This public lecture is a collaboration between the UGM and PT Bawa Indonesia Global and features two keynote speakers from PT Freeport Indonesia and Komunal Fintech-Neo Rural Bank.
Free Event - Webinar
Through webinars, UGM is able to share knowledge and multiple perspectives on diverse topics. The Faculty of Medicine, Public Health, and Nursing at the regional level participated in the 2023 ASEAN Higher Education Conference (AHEC). It raised the topic “Post COVID Sustainable Health Care and Industry,” which is relevant and related to the development of the COVID-19 pandemic throughout the world. Indonesia led the agenda, and Prof. dr. Ova, the Rector of Universitas Gadjah Mada, was the keynote speaker.
The university is always concerned about the development of digitalisation. The Center for Transportation and Logistics Studies (Pustral) UGM held the Digital Supply Network to identify the role of stakeholders in fulfilling the needs of implementing digital supply networks in Indonesia. The concern about Artificial Intelligence (AI) is reinforced with collaboration between the Center for Digital Society (CfDS) and Indonesia’s Artificial Intelligence Innovation (KORIKA) through the AI 101: Potential and Implementation of Artificial Intelligence in Various Sectors. It has increased awareness that developments in hardware, algorithms, and data availability are growing the position of AI in various fields today. The Pustral also mentioned the infrastructure development challenges related to the government rules. It is spreading public awareness that Indonesia is ranked 44th out of 53 countries in the Institute for Management Development (IMD) World Competitive Yearbook 2022 Report.
The concern about mental health and reproductive health is part of the HPU framework. UGM states in a webinar on mental and reproductive health that there is zero tolerance for bullying and that UGM wishes to create an anti-bullying campus. The campus must be responsible for supporting and facilitating the mental and reproductive health of its students, staff, and faculty. In reproductive health, the webinar focuses its discussion on cancers found in Female Reproductive Organs. Through webinars such as these, UGM wishes to raise awareness and provide the public and students with health insights.
Free Event - Seminar/Workshop
The university also hosts free seminars, workshops, and conferences on popular topics such as technology, digitalization, and health issues that bring insight for students and the public. The Faculty of Biology held the national seminar on Open Science and AI Technology. Besides students and researchers, participants come from many different backgrounds such as conservation and biology practitioners. Technology was also the focus of the national seminar held by the Faculty of Agriculture on the Implementation of Smart Eco-Bioproduction. This technology is being developed to increase food safety and enhance plant disease diagnostics.
The vocational school in UGM believes that reaching the SDGs requires research to accelerate the implementation process. UGM held a discussion on “The Role of Applied Research in Achieving Sustainable Development Goals” and invited several policy makers in the vocational field to attend. Among participants were students from universities across Indonesia, such as Universitas Sebelas Maret, UIN Sunan Kalijaga, Universitas Negeri Yogyakarta, etc. The discussion was divided into 4 focuses: Sociohumanities, Science and Technology, Agrotechnology, and Health clusters. It highlighted the importance of innovation and togetherness to achieve the SDGs goals.
The role of higher education in technology development is necessary. That is why the Indonesian Educational Laboratory Management Association Universitas Gadjah Mada (PPLPI UGM) are involved in the importance of trend and educational laboratory progress on issues such as Biosafety and Biosecurity. UGM’s Faculty of Engineering also organized a seminar on the Professional Engineer Study Program which aims to share knowledge and experience and improve the quality of engineering. There are about 45 papers in total that were presented at this seminar. The papers discussed civil engineering, geodetic engineering, chemical engineering, geological engineering, industrial engineering, mechanical engineering, electrical engineering, information engineering, and also architectural engineering. Similarly, the Faculty of Agricultural Technology held the “8th International Conference – Indonesian Society for Lactic Acid Bacteria and Gut Microbiota”. Researchers and students presented their papers, as well as representatives from big companies such as PUI-PT Probiotik, PT Royal Medicalink Pharmalab, and PT Yakult Indonesia Persada.
