Water Recycling Program Implementation in UGM

There are several faculties and units in Universitas Gadjah Mada that implement water recycling programs as shown in the figures below. These include the University’s Mosque (Masjid Kampus UGM) (Fig. 1), in which the ablution water is flowed to the pond and reused for watering the plants. The Faculty of Economics and Business implements the gray water installation for being reused in the building (Fig. 3). In the Faculty of Animal Science, used water from the canteen is recycled. Used water from the canteen flows through the canal toward the garden. Then, it is used for irrigating plants in the garden (Figure 4). Sewerage disposal in UGM Residence is collected into an underground collector tank. Inside the collector tank, the sewerage disposal will be decomposed then it will be absorbed into the second collector tank. Inside the second collector tank, the solid disposal will settle down whilst the liquid phase will go into the third collector tank. Liquid waste in the third collector tank is filtered to be used for watering plantations (Fig. 7). UGM uses an up-flow and down-flow system for water recycling. UGM has deep wells, shallow wells, and groundwater tanks as water sources and can be recycled as shown in Fig. 11. Of the total wastewater available (Fig. 12), 80% is greywater which can be used for watering plants. Water and wastewater technology UGM (Fig. 14) is a forum that is closely related to the availability of clean water and the prevention of pollution of clean water sources. One of the activities is the processing of gray water and the manufacture of portable WWTP tanks. Manufacture of portable WWTP tanks is capable of treating greywater using the microbubble nozzle principle. The final product of the preparation is used for watering plants.
