UGM is the pioneer of the collaborative Student Community Service-Community Empowerment Learning (SCS-CEL) in 2020 with the Enabling Humanitarian Attributes for Nurturing Community based Engineering (ENHANCE) team. ENHANCE is a joint project funded by Erasmus+ with coordinators from the University of Warwick, UK.
“Besides UGM, the teams involved in this collaborative SCS are the University of Warwick (UoW), Bandung Institute of Technology (ITB), and Brawijaya University (UB),” said Director of Community Service UGM, Prof. Ir. Irfan Dwidya Prijambada, M.Eng., Ph.D., on Sunday (16/8).
Irfan said that UGM’s proposal to hold a collaborative SCS-CEL emerged when the Practice Dialogue Workshop was held in Indonesia. It is quite reasonable considering that UGM is a pioneer of the Community Service Program in Indonesia since it was first held in 1951 and an international summer course related to Humanitarian Engineering.
Initially, UoW, ITB and UB planned to send ten students to UGM and participate in this collaborative SCS-CEL. However, due to the Covid-19 pandemic, UoW canceled sending its students. ITB still sends nine students, UB 19 students, and UGM sends 21 students in the 2020-YO183 unit and 20 students in the 2020-YO198 unit.
“At that time, UGM took the initiative to change the SCS-CEL Period II concept to online, which was the first time in history,” Irfan added.
In this collaborative SCS-CEL UGM formed two units, namely the 2020-YO183 unit with the theme “Optimizing Pollution Handling of the Ngrancah River and Sermo Reservoir and Development of Creative Economy, Tourism, and Culture in Hargowilis and Hargotirto Villages” with Ir. Intan Supraba, S.T., M.Sc., Ph.D., IPM, ASEAN Eng. as a Field Supervisor (DPL) and the 2020-YO198 unit with the theme “Productivity Optimization, Product Diversification and Tofu Factory Waste Treatment in Margo Agung and Margo Mulyo Villages, Seyegan District, Sleman Regency with M. Rais Alfiansyah Taufiq, S.T., M.Sc. as Field Supervisor.
From the activities that will start from June 29 to August 18, several outputs that have been made by the SCS-CEL unit 2020-YO183 team include: Making a Bioswale Design Book; Travel Gate Design Book; Hargotirto Village Commodity Map; Map of Tourism Supporting Facilities and Infrastructure of Hargotirto Village; Map of the Potential Strategic Location of the Souvenir Center of the Hargotirto District; VILLAGE Posters and Videos Apps; Fish Nugget and Fish Meatball Brochure; AMAZING infographics; Water Recirculation System Booklet; Guide to the Benefits of Algae for Health; Javanese Storybook Handling Covid-19; etc.
While the outputs made by the 2020-YO198 SCS-CEL team include: Integrated Tofu Center 3D Design; Posters on the Importance of Maintaining Hygiene and Sanitation; Handbook for Making Tofu Liquid Waste Biogas Reactor; Posters, Booklets and Educational Videos on Tofu Wastewater Treatment; Design of Pellet Making Tool from Tofu Dregs; Digital Booklet; and High School Student Assistance Webinar.
