Not only does UGM implement energy efficiency practices throughout its campus, our university contributes to national energy efficiency targets, with programs led by our champion faculties—the Faculty of Engineering, the Faculty of Geography, the Faculty of Economics and Business, the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, and the Graduate School—and our Centers of Excellence—the UGM Center for Energy Studies (PSE), the Center for Environmental Studies (PSLH), and the Centre for Development of Smart and Green Building (CeDSGreeB).
UGM spearheads collaboration with local industries and develops impactful solutions for sustainable energy.

The Center for Energy Studies has drafted a Guideline for Industry Decarbonization – Prepared for: Iron and Steel Industry to address challenges and opportunities associated with decarbonizing Indonesia’s iron and steel industry. This guideline was prepared for industry actors as both a strategic tool for decision-making and a technical reference to adopt best practices in industrial decarbonization. It contains insights into technologies and economic frameworks to achieve significant emissions reductions while maintaining operational efficiency and market competitiveness.
UGM also provides direct energy efficiency services and expertise for industry actors.
Energy Audits
The Center for Energy Studies offers energy audit services to industries to help identify opportunities to reduce energy consumption and improve operational efficiency. These assessments provide tailored recommendations for implementing energy-saving measures.
CedSGreeB also offers energy audit services. They partnered with the Environmental Council (MLH) of the Central Board of Muhammadiyah to deliver an Energy Audit Training for administrators and facility managers of Muhammadiyah charitable enterprises (AUM) in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java.
Energy Training Program
The Center of Energy Studies also offers the Certified Energy Manager (CEM) Training program in collaboration with PT TUV Nord Indonesia. This five-day course equips participants with comprehensive knowledge of energy management, covering topics such as energy auditing, efficiency strategies, and the implementation of energy management systems. The program is designed for students and alumni specialising in energy conversion, preparing them for roles as energy managers in various industries.
Laboratory
UGM also has the Renewable Energy Laboratory at the Faculty of Engineering specializing in the development of new and renewable energy systems and energy conservation systems. The laboratory not only facilitates learning activities and reach, it also provides services for industry, including energy conservation studies in industry and in buildings, and safety studies of industrial systems.
Workshops
The Center for Energy Studies has also brought together key actors in Indonesia’s energy sector through discussion forums, workshops, and Focus Group Discussions (FGDs) to discuss energy efficiency initiatives.
For instance, they coordinated an FGD on strategies and studies related to the commercialization and economic aspects of natural gas development to support the government’s efforts to substitute LPG use with natural gas in the household sector. Among the attendees were representatives from government agencies, industry contractors, and private sector companies, including: SKK Migas, KKKS, PT Arsynergy Resources, PT Essa Industries Indonesia Tbk, PT Titis Sampurna, and PT Prosympac Oil and Gas.
On another occasion, the center visited the headquarters of PT Pertamina Geothermal Energy to discuss the potential development of green hydrogen derived from geothermal sources. The visit concluded with a joint statement affirming the commitment to continue collaboration through a pre-feasibility study on green hydrogen and its derivatives.
