According to data from the Ministry of Environment and Forestry’s (KLHK) National Waste Management Information System (SIPSN) for 2022, Indonesia faces serious challenges related to waste management. Of the total national waste production of 21.1 million tonnes, around 7.2 million tonnes or 34.29% has not been properly managed. This problem includes an increase in plastic waste accumulation in the country, which is expected to continue to grow until 2025. The KLHK has set a target to reduce plastic waste accumulation by 30% and increase its management to 70%.
Indonesia, known as one of the world’s largest producers of plastic waste, faces challenges in waste management, including in Yogyakarta. The accumulation of waste at waste disposal depots in Yogyakarta has become a major concern due to its negative impact on health and the environment, such as air pollution, water contamination, disease transmission by insects, and the risk of microplastics and soil and plant poisoning.

On 21 June 2024, the Community Service Department of Family and Community Medicine FK-KMK UGM, together with Bank Sampah Go-Green and HDSS Sleman, held a Workshop and Certification Training on Waste Management for the Karang Taruna Dusun Cupuwatu I youth organisation. This workshop aimed to provide education on waste selection and processing as a strategy to boost the local economy, the economic benefits of waste management, and the health impacts of waste issues. The agenda was expected to enhance their knowledge and skills in waste management, especially for the youth group.
