3.3.3. Shared sports facilities

Controlling non-communicable diseases (NCDs) has become a top health priority in Indonesia. The government has stated this issue requires strong preventive and promotive efforts, as these conditions significantly influence mortality and morbidity rates. More than 50% of overall health status is shaped by unhealthy behaviors—especially smoking, poor diet, and physical inactivity.

Exercise is a form of medicine. Regular physical activity has been proven to both prevent and treat major chronic conditions such as heart disease, pulmonary disease, diabetes, and obesity. These facts underscore the critical role of promoting active lifestyles which can be encouraged through the provision of sports and recreational facilities.

As a Health Promoting University, UGM is required to have sports facilities on campus since engaging in sports or physical activities is one way to maintain a healthy and fit body. Not only is our university equipped with a multitude of sports and recreational facilities on campus that are open to the general public, UGM’s HPU team provides literacy programs through social media and visitations. HPU programs are implemented in faculties through 8 working groups (HPU in the Faculty of Agriculture and in the Faculty of Pharmacy). Efforts to ensure the sustainability of the program include promoting active use, maintaining safety, security, and comfort, as well as ensuring affordability and accessibility. For example, using social media so that information can be easily accessed by the public. See here for the Wisdom Park social media page.

The following is a list of sport and recreation facilities available at UGM for the public:

Wisdom Park

Located on the east side of the Bulaksumur campus, UGM’s Wisdom Park is the university’s  recreation and green open space area that is open to the public. The park is equipped with a basketball court, jogging and cycling track, and outdoor exercising equipment. The jogging track is surrounded by lush trees that provide natural shade, allowing visitors to run without being exposed to the scorching sun. In addition, public facilities such as toilets, parking areas, and seating spaces for resting are available. These complete facilities make the park comfortable and friendly for families, sports communities, and individual visitors.

Open Space Area for Jogging and Outdoor Activities

UGM also has open space areas at Embung PIAT, the reservoir at the Agro-technology Innovation Center. The general public can jog around the reservoir and include a playground for children. The area around Grha Sabha Pramana (GSP), UGM’s main multipurpose building, is open to the public and can be used for exercising and recreational activities after office hours and on holidays.
