2.5.2 Events for local farmers and food producers

As a leading institution in sustainability, UGM consistently demonstrates its dedication to empowering local farmers and food producers through events that encourage collaboration and knowledge sharing. Through open houses, capacity-building programs, and international workshops, we foster innovation in sustainable agriculture, support ethical and efficient farming practices, and contribute to strengthening local economies. Our events allow farmers and food producers with access to networks, expertise, resources, and knowledge essential for advancing long-term agricultural resilience and food security.

One key event in 2024 was the UGM local festival called Festival Apangi, based on culture through the celebration of the tenth day of Muharram in Gorontalo City. Apangi is a traditional Gorontalo cake served with palm sugar sauce. This tradition supports the preservation of traditional knowledge by local food producers.

On October 27, 2024, UGM organized the FabCamp Challenge 2024 at the Field Research Center in Kulon Progo, Yogyakarta. The event, which brought together participants from several countries, facilitated collaboration between UGM, local industries, and government stakeholders to develop practical prototypes for local agricultural challenges. Participants visited Kandang Maggot Beji, where they learned about sustainable waste management and the potential of maggot cultivation. This initiative not only tackles waste disposal issues but also supports the local economy by providing a protein source for animal feed. During the visit, participants engaged with local farmers to better understand the challenges they face and to discuss possible innovative solutions.

Another visit was made to the Mlarangan Asri Farmer Group, a community-based initiative promoting sustainable agriculture. Here, participants observed firsthand the effects of climate change on local farming practices and exchanged ideas on resilience strategies. The interaction fostered a collaborative atmosphere, encouraging the development of sustainable and adaptive agricultural solutions.

The Faculty of Geography in collaboration with the Agro-technology Innovation Center (PIAT) conducted a follow-up activity to the previous Waste Management Workshop. This program aimed to strengthen campus staff capacity in eco-enzyme management and promote the adoption of sustainable waste management practices based on the 3R principles: Reduce, Reuse, and Recycle within the faculty environment.

At the PIAT Recycling Innovation House (RinDU), local food producers received practical training on three organic waste management techniques: Black Soldier Fly (BSF) cultivation, composting, and eco-enzyme production. In the BSF session, participants explored the complete cultivation cycle from preparing eggs and prepupae, maintaining the flies, and feeding them organic waste, to harvesting the larvae as a sustainable resource.
