11.4.8. Planning development – new build standards

As a university constantly striving to be at the forefront of global research and education, UGM continues to strengthen its campus infrastructure to facilitate our researchers and scholars. Over the years, our university has renovated existing structures and developed new ones, including establishing knowledge hubs and advanced research and learning centers equipped with state-of-the-art laboratories and cutting-edge technology.

The Gelanggang Inovasi dan Kreativitas (GIK) is one of the newest additions to UGM’s growing campus facilities. Serving as a Super Creative Hub to accelerate innovation and creativity among academia, the industry, and the government sector, the building obtained the Green Building (BGH) Planning Stage certification from the Indonesian Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing. During its planning stage back in 2021, the Ministry issued Regulation Number 21 Year 2021 on Green Building Standards as an update to the previous 2015 regulation. UGM—a public university and a government-owned institution—is required to comply with this regulation. GIK stands as a clear example of UGM’s commitment to adhere to Green Building principles in the planning and development of new campus structures.

In addition, UGM already has 10 buildings certified under Greenship, a green building certification issued by the Green Building Council Indonesia (GBCI), which is affiliated with GBCI International.

Green Buildings are a solution to some of Indonesia’s most pressing sustainability issues, capable of improving the lives of millions of people. In fact, UGM contributed to creating the Roadmap for Green Building Implementation in Indonesia. The university supports the government’s program to establish high-performance building standards that prioritize sustainability. The design of these buildings takes into account sustainable land use, energy and water conservation, proper waste management, the use of environmentally friendly materials, and green-oriented building management.

UGM researchers actively took part in drafting and launching the roadmap along with three ministries—the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, the Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources, and the Ministry of Home Affairs. This government initiative was supported by the Global Buildings Performance Network (GBPN), with whom UGM has frequently collaborated.

In the future, the planning and development of new buildings at UGM will continue to follow sustainable standards. The Green Building (BGH) and Greenship principles, which embody sustainability values, have been adopted into the UGM Building Code and are applied in the maintenance and operation of buildings across faculties and schools. This implementation follows the guidelines outlined in Book 1: Green Building Management and Book 2: Existing Building Management, both a product of the UGM Sustainability Campus Award launched in 2024.
