Together with Caritra Indonesia, a professional organization that engages in urban and rural area development, policy and government regulation studies, and a consultant in healthy housing consultancy, UGM broached interventions to address Indonesia’s housing crisis. The proposed solutions encompassed utilizing and revitalizing vacant land, in addition to optimizing of other types of housing such as unoccupied houses, apartments, flats, and rental rooms (kos-kosan).
The Faculty of Engineering and their alumni association (KATGAMA), in collaboration with the Indonesia Offroad Federation (IOF), built temporary housing for communities affected by landslides in Lembur Sawah Village, West Java. The structures were constructed in compliance with sustainable building standards. The construction incorporated bamboo materials, including the roofing. The use of bamboo—an abundant and affordable resource in Indonesia—ensures that communities have access to affordable housing solutions.
The Centre for Development of Smart and Green Building (CeDSGreeB) at UGM has joined the R&D divisions of several Indonesian building material companies to form a consortium for the development of environmentally friendly prefabricated materials. Several challenges have already been encountered in regards to developing this technology. The issue has been brought to the attention of relevant policymakers, including representatives from the Ministry of Public Works and Public Housing, who attended the consortium.
