Strengthening Water Conservation: UGM’s Achievements in Research, Leadership, and Sustainable Infrastructure

In 2024, Fitria Widhiningsih, S.P., M.Sc., a young lecturer from the Faculty of Agriculture at Gadjah Mada University, won first place in the Young Water Sustainability Leaders 2024 competition. She achieved this recognition after presenting her research at the 10th World Water Forum, held in Bali on May 23, 2024. Her study, compiled in a paper entitled ‘Fostering Water Conservation Awareness among Gen Z through Social Learning: Insights from the Mini T-ReKs Initiative in Yogyakarta, Indonesia’, highlights the potential for strengthening water conservation education within local communities. Through this work, she aspires to inspire younger generations to expand and disseminate knowledge on water conservation practices in their respective environments.

The Faculty of Engineering at Universitas Gadjah Mada contributes to water conservation through the implementation of sustainable daily practices. The SGLC FT UGM building is equipped with smart water taps that limit water flow to 2.5 liters per minute, enabling controlled and efficient water use. In addition, the building operates a water treatment plant that processes grey water, producing treated water that meets quality standards for landscape irrigation. Through these measures, the Faculty extends the water use cycle within the area and strengthens its commitment to responsible water management.
