UGM Advances Sustainable Water Solutions at World Water Forum 2024

UGM Actively Participates in the 10th World Water Forum

Lecturers from the Faculty of Geography at UGM presented innovative clean water solutions during the 10th World Water Forum. In one of the sessions, they led a discussion highlighting the critical role of forest protection as the primary source of clean water, emphasizing a comprehensive technocratic, participatory, and social technology innovation approach.

At the same event, UGM collaborated with Artha Graha Peduli (AGP) and the Bali Mangrove Care Forum (FPM-B) to host a workshop titled “Water–Energy Nexus, Achieving SDGs” on 23 May 2024 at Telaga Waja, Tanjung Benoa, Bali. This workshop was attended by participants from Pakistan, Nigeria, Malaysia, the Philippines, Slovakia, and Indonesia, along with officials such as the Head of the Bali Tahura Technical Implementation Unit and the Indonesian Ambassador to UNESCO.

UGM Energy Study Center Introduces Solar Desalination Technology to Address Clean Water Scarcity

As part of the 10th World Water Forum Side Events, UGM organized a workshop on the “Water–Energy Nexus, Achieving SDGs” at the Tanjung Benoa Mangrove Rehabilitation Area on 23 May 2024. The event featured speakers from the UGM Energy Study Center (PSE), Environmental Study Center (PSLH), Faculty of Geography, PT Hutama Karya, and Bali Mangrove Care Forum, moderated by Dr. Intan Supraba from the Faculty of Engineering.

During the session, researchers noted that despite national improvements—91.05% drinking water service coverage and 80.92% sanitation access—many remote and coastal areas still face limited clean water availability. Dr. Rachmawan Budiarto introduced a solar-powered desalination system known as Photovoltaic Sea Water Reverse Osmosis (PV-SWRO), which will be implemented through the SALT Project. This initiative aims to supply sufficient, good-quality drinking water using renewable energy at an affordable cost, particularly for small islands and coastal communities.
