UGM’s commitment to addressing women’s applications, acceptance, entry, and participation at the university is demonstrated by achieving first-place among Indonesian universities in the field of Gender Studies according to EduRank.
The commitment is reflected in UGM’s policies for applications and entry. Rector’s Regulation Number 3 of 2023, amended by Rector’s Regulation Number 4 of 2023, outlines the admission of new students to undergraduate and applied undergraduate programs at UGM. It emphasizes the concept of fairness in student admission processes, stated explicitly in Rector’s Regulation Number 11 Year 2019 Article 9. Admission is conducted based on fairness and equality, ensuring that opportunities are open and accessible to all candidates, regardless of socio-economic background, gender, ethnicity, or religion. The regulation is aimed at creating an inclusive and non-discriminatory admission process, aligning with UGM’s mission to uphold diversity and excellence.
The admission policy is also aligned with the previous admission policy in Rector’s Regulation Number 11 Year 2019 Article 9 which stated the accessibility of higher education for prospective students from the Papua region.
These policies ensure that UGM’s admission process provides equal opportunity and no gender-based bias towards any individual regardless of background. The admissions process is entirely based on the candidates’ academic achievements, potential, and abilities, with fairness applied to all. The admission process itself is conducted transparently to ensure accountability and trust.
The university’s commitment to inclusivity and gender equality is clearly stated in the Strategic Plan for 2022 – 2027. UGM ensures that women have equal opportunities in applications, admissions, and participation in all academic activities. UGM’s support to gender equality is expressed through various research, seminars, public discussions, training and community service.
Page 13 states: “…UGM is committed to upholding universal principles—namely social justice, equality, inclusivism, and sustainability—in all aspects of its institutional policies, both in relation to the Tridharma and to university governance.”
Meanwhile, in page 14: “UGM promotes equality for all people by eliminating discrimination based on race, ethnicity, gender, marital status, disability, age, religion, social background, political affiliation, or minority group status (underrepresented minorities).”
UGM’s commitments to gender equality addressed all types of enrollment, including employee enrollment. The outcomes of implementing these policies have not only proven the increasing rate of female student admission and graduation rates but also increased the number of women rate of faculty and staff.
