Specific Administrative Support for Interdisciplinary Science Research at Universitas Gadjah Mada

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) provides specific administrative support for interdisciplinary science research teams through a structured institutional framework governed by university regulations and coordinated centrally by the Directorate of Research. Based on UGM Rector’s Regulation No. 10 of 2023 (Article 76-78) , the formulation and implementation of interdisciplinary research policies are managed at the institutional level, ensuring that research activities across faculties, schools, and research centers are systematically coordinated and integrated.

Administrative support for interdisciplinary research is further strengthened through the role of Research Centers (Pusat Studi), which are mandated to develop knowledge based on multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary research approaches. These centers function as administrative and coordination hubs that facilitate collaboration among interdisciplinary science research teams across faculties and scientific disciplines.

UGM also provides integrated administrative support through the Integrated Laboratory Management (Manajemen Laboratorium Terpadu – MLT), which coordinates laboratory services for interdisciplinary research groups, including those conducted within Learning Centers and integrated laboratory facilities. This system ensures that interdisciplinary research teams have access to standardized laboratory services, shared research infrastructure, and coordinated laboratory administration across disciplines.

In addition, several institutional regulations reinforce the implementation of interdisciplinary research at UGM.

UGM Rector’s Regulation No. 14 of 2021 on Research (Article 3) states that research activities may be conducted using multidisciplinary, interdisciplinary, and transdisciplinary approaches. UGM Rector’s Regulation No. 8 of 2024 on Research Flagship Programs (Article 6) establishes flagship research themes that reflect interdisciplinary approaches in priority areas such as food sovereignty, health technology, energy transition, climate change, and socio-cultural resilience. Furthermore, UGM Rector’s Regulation No. 25 of 2024 on Benefit Sharing for Integrated Laboratory Marketplace Activities UGM regulates the utilization of integrated laboratory services, including Learning Centers, as shared facilities dedicated to multidisciplinary and interdisciplinary research activities.

Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) for Interdisciplinary Research Administration

To ensure structured and effective administrative support for interdisciplinary science research teams, Universitas Gadjah Mada implements a series of Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs). These SOPs cover the full research lifecycle and facilitate coordination across faculties and disciplines, including:

  1. Research Programme Management

Administrative procedures for managing research programmes, including the development of researcher databases, coordination of internal and external research funding, and management of research enterprise activities. These processes support interdisciplinary research teams in accessing funding schemes and coordinating research activities across multiple scientific disciplines.

SOP of Research Resource Development
SOP of Research Enterprise
  1. Scientific Publication and Intellectual Property Management

Administrative support for the management of scientific publications, academic journals, and research dissemination, as well as the development and protection of intellectual property. These procedures ensure that outputs from interdisciplinary science research are properly documented, recognized, and translated into impactful scientific and innovation outcomes.

SOP of Scientific Publication and Intellectual Property Management
  1. Secretariat and Administrative Management

Centralized administrative services for interdisciplinary research, including research administration and publication administration managed by the Directorate of Research. These services facilitate coordination, documentation, reporting, and communication across faculties and research units, ensuring efficient administrative processes for interdisciplinary research activities.

SOP of ISR’s Secretariat and Administrative Management

Through this comprehensive administrative ecosystem (combining centralized governance, regulatory frameworks, research centers, SOP-based processes, and integrated laboratory management) UGM ensures that interdisciplinary science research teams are supported by structured, efficient, and system-based administrative services. These services enable effective coordination across faculties, facilitate the integration of disciplinary methods, and strengthen cross-disciplinary research performance across the university.
