Regional Workshop on Sustainable Campus for Universities in Asia-Pacific: “Green Technology for Sustainable Development”

Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) have an important impact on the goals of higher education.

Contributing to the SDGs is one of the ways to create value for higher education to encourage growth and overcome risks. Focus on goals in the fields of education, teaching, research, and community service and green technology is one of the tools to achieve goals on sustainability.

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has been moving towards a sustainable campus in the fields of education and green campus. We create values, bring positive impact, and inspire stakeholders, to improve their ability to create sustainable value. We have become prominent university promoting green campus that has employed numerous green technologies.

To become an agent of social change and contribute to the SDGs, UGM realizes that collaborative efforts from various parties are important. To provide the place to have this conversation, exchanging knowledge and best practices among stakeholders of higher education in Asia Pacific, UGM in Indonesia opening its door to welcome academics, government officials, private sectors, as well as NGO in Asia Pacific.

Related to this, UGM and UIGreenMetrics will conduct a workshop entitled “Regional Workshop on Sustainable Campus for Universities in Asia-Pacific: “Green Technology for Sustainable Development.” The upcoming Workshop scheduled to be held on Monday – Tuesday, 22 – 23 July 2024, at Universitas Gadjah Mada, Yogyakarta, Indonesia.

Day 1: Monday, 22 July 2024

    Participants arrive in the venue and sign the attendance list.

    Opening, safety briefing, and video introduction.
  • 09.00 – 09.30 Welcoming Remarks
    This session will present welcoming remarks from Vice Rector for Education and Learning of Universitas Gadjah Mada (Prof. Dr. Wening Udasmoro, S.S., M.Hum., DEA.) which also covers information on SDGs and sustainable transformation using green technology in UGM and welcoming remarks from Chairperson UI GreenMetric (Prof. Dr. Ir. Riri Fitri Sari, MM., M.Sc.)
  • 09.30 – 10.00 Keynote Speech: Implementation of Sustainability in the Special Region of Yogyakarta
    This session will explore SDGs and sustainable transformation using green technology. The topic covers issues about the basics and principles of SDGs implemented in DIY, the importance of sustainable transformation using green technology in DIY, and future challenges in DIY in green technology.

    This session will explore the methodology of UI GreenMetric and UI GreenMetric World University Ranking Network

  • 13.00 – 13.20 Panel Session 1: Settings & Infrastructure
    The presentation will discuss topics related to the policies toward the green environment. Include space for greenery and safeguarding the environment, as well as developing sustainable energy.
  • 13.20 – 13.40 Panel Session 1: Energy & Climate Change
    The presentation will discuss topics related to the attention to the use of energy and climate change issues. Organizations are expected to increase the effort in energy efficiency on their buildings, nature, and resources.
  • 13.40 – 14.00 Panel Session 1: Waste
    The presentation will discuss topics related to waste treatment and recycling programs. Organizations must take notice of its waste production as well as recycling efforts.
  • 14.00 – 14.30 Q&A
    This session will provide opportunities to discuss topics discussed in Panel Session 1
  • 14.30 – 14.50 Panel Session 2: Water Resources
    The presentation will discuss topics related to the effort to decrease water usage, increase conservation program, and protect the habitat.
  • 14.50 – 15.10 Panel Session 2: Transportation
    The presentation will discuss topics related to universities’ policies in limiting the number of motor vehicles, the use of public transport and bicycles to encourage a healthier environment and reduce carbon footprint.
  • 15.10 – 15.30 Panel Session 2: Education & Research
    The presentation will discuss topics related to the effort in creating and supporting the new generation concern with sustainability issues.
  • 15.30 – 16.00 Q&A
    This session will provide opportunities to discuss topics discussed in Panel Session 2

Venues

Ruang Multimedia 1, Gedung Pusat UGM, 3rd Floor, North Wing
The UGM Central Building is a 65 year-old building since it was inaugurated on December 19, 1959 by President Ir. Sukarno. This three-story building in the Bulaksumur complex marks the establishment of the first university built by the Government of the Republic of Indonesia after independence.

The Agriculture Innovation Center (PIAT)
PIAT UGM at Berbah was established in 1975 in a 35-hectare land. PIAT has a basic concept as a center of agricultural innovation based on integrated farming by promoting an economy based on environmentally friendly technology innovation and optimization of energy resources.

 

UGM Science Techno Park
UGM Science Techno Park is a productive vehicle based on research and innovation to support the learning process in synergy with industry and government, and focuses on overseeing 5 downstream fields, namely 1) Health and pharmaceutical fields, 2) Agro-industrial fields, 3) New energy fields and renewable, 4) Manufacturing, engineering and information technology, 5) Heritage, arts, culture and sustainable management.

Prambanan Temple
Prambanan Temple or Roro Jonggrang Temple is the largest Hindu temple complex in Indonesia which was built in the 9th century AD. This temple is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of the most beautiful temples in Southeast Asia. This temple is dedicated to the Trimurti, the three main Hindu gods, namely Brahma, Vishnu and Shiva. Based on the Siwagrha inscription, the original name of this temple complex was Siwagrha. This temple complex is located in the Special Region of Yogyakarta and Central Java.

Visas

Visa-free entry
The Indonesian Visa Exemption Scheme allows travellers from 169 nationalities to enter Indonesia without a visa. Travellers can visit Indonesia for up to 30 days and non-extendable if they are entering Indonesia through an international airport, sea, or land border checkpoint from a neighbouring country. The visa exemption facility can be used for tourism, family visit, social visit, art and cultural, government duty, to deliver a speech or attend a seminar, international exhibition, meetings with head office or representative office in Indonesia, or transit. Check if your country is eligible.

Visa on arrival
Visa on Arrival applicable to passport holders from 97 countries without needing to apply for a Tourist Visa from an Indonesian Embassy in their own country. Visa on Arrival (VoA) can be obtained directly at our entry port or electronically at https://molina.imigrasi.go.id/ or https://evisa.imigrasi.go.id/ Check if your country is eligible.
Documents you will need to bring with you are: (1) Passport valid for 6 months since date of entry; (2) Return or onward ticket (which indicates the date of departure from Indonesia);
(3) Visa on Arrival fee Rp. 500.000
We can provide visa invitation letters for registered participants when requested. Please email a photo/scan of your passport to wcu@ugm.ac.id once you have registered.

Getting there

Speakers and participants are responsible for reserving and covering the cost of transportation to/from Yogyakarta. However, particular to speakers, local transportation will be provided. Speakers will be picked up from/to Yogyakarta/Tugu Station and to/from Gedung Pusat UGM during the event.

To get to your hotel from airport or train station
At New Yogyakarta International Airport the Airport Rail Link provides a 40-min train ride to Yogyakarta/Tugu Station which can be booked through https://reservation.railink.co.id/ from the station you would better use private hiring vehicles to get to your accommodation such as ride-hailing services namely Grab, Gojek, and Maxim. Taxis are readily available too.
From New Yogyakarta International Airport, you can also directly hire private hiring vehicles. It will be practical if you carry heavy items, or you are travelling in a group. However, the travel time will be doubled (1.5 hour) and the cost will be quite pricey compared to the airport train.

To get to Gedung Pusat UGM
Taxis are readily available throughout Yogyakarta. Ride-hailing services such as Grab, Gojek, and Maxim also operate extensively in the city and can be booked through your phone.
For delegates staying in nearby hotels or accommodation, walking or cycling to the venue can be a pleasant and eco-friendly option allowing you to soak up the vibrant atmosphere of Yogyakarta’s streets.

Accommodation

Speakers will be provided with accommodation for the duration of the event (3 nights).

Participants are responsible for reserving and covering the cost of accommodation for the duration of their stay.
