Universitas Gadjah Mada has implemented policies to promote the provision of sustainably sourced food on campus, aligning with its commitment to ensure that food on campus is sustainably farmed. This commitment is articulated in Circular Letter Number 1797/UN1.P/KJM/BU/2020 on Sustainable Lifestyle, which advises university communities to prioritise products supplied by ethical food producers. Following the encouragement, Rector Regulation Number 12 of 2022 about the university’s procurement guidelines mandate that the acquisition of goods and services considers sustainable aspects, including environmental factors. Details on these policies can be found here.
Pasar Krempyeng (Krempyeng Market), Universitas Gadjah Mada’s Academic Hospital (RSA UGM) is a regular event held on the Wage Wednesday (a day in the Javanese calendar) each month. This market features organic foods, selected food items in collaboration with various faculties, and Nutrihospital RSA UGM. These healthy foods and drinks are sourced from organic ingredients. The tenants consist of several business divisions from UGM faculties, including the Faculty of Animal Science, the Faculty of Agriculture, the Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT) UGM, as well as empowerment programs for Sleman MSMEs, Women Farmers’ Groups (KWT) in fostered villages, and the local community around RSA UGM.
Aside from this routine activity, we highlight the contribution of the Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT) UGM in providing farming products for RSA food sources. PIAT UGM employs a circular farming system that integrates crops, livestock, industries, and waste treatment into a closed-loop system (PIAT UGM circular farming). This approach enhances resource efficiency, reduces waste, and promotes environmental sustainability. PIAT’s circular farming system has been supporting the development of an urban farming system in the surrounding area of the community of Yogyakarta.

The Faculty of Agriculture at Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) has innovatively transformed the rooftop of Building A1 into a grape garden and co-working space for its academic community. This initiative aligns with the faculty’s commitment to urban farming and sustainable agricultural practices. Students and staff in the Faculty of Agriculture have consumed the grapes produced.
UGM has launched the Smart Agri Plant Factory, an innovative facility developed by the Department of Agricultural and Biosystem Engineering within the Faculty of Agricultural Technology. This initiative aims to advance modern, intelligent, and sustainable agriculture by addressing global challenges such as climate change, food security, and efficient land use. Products of this indoor farming have not yet been consumed by UGM’s community since this modern farming had just been launched recently as a research facility.
UGM demonstrates its dedication to promoting sustainable food practices and fostering a culture of responsible consumption on campus through these policies and initiatives.
