UGM’s key role player in sustainable tourism practices is the Pusat Studi Pariwisata (PUSPAR) UGM. The Center for Tourism Studies conducts research and provides training on sustainable tourism practices. Established in the 1970s, PUSPAR UGM focuses on enhancing the relevance of academic disciplines in addressing current societal issues and fostering interdisciplinary research in tourism. This includes organising workshops and seminars for community members and local governments, emphasising the importance of sustainable land management in tourism development. Several educational and community outreach programs are :
- The Young Southeast Asian Leaders Initiative (YSEALI) Regional Workshop
- Collaboration with regional planning agencies to develop tourism master plans that incorporate sustainable land management principles. An example is the partnership with the Regional Planning, Research, and Innovation Agency (Bapperida) of Sikka Regency to create a tourism master plan focusing on infrastructure development and promotion strategies (Puspar UGM – Sikka Regency).
Through these efforts, UGM demonstrates a strong commitment to promoting sustainable tourism development that balances economic growth with environmental conservation.
