“BEYOND CONSUMPTION, TOWARDS CREATION: UGM LEADS!”

UGM exemplifies a leading university committed to responsible consumption and production (RCP) practices. Since 2017, UGM has pursued sustainability through a strategic plan formalized under a Rector’s Regulation, focusing on a “Sustainable Lifestyle.” This plan has translated into concrete actions implemented between 2020 and 2022.

UGM’s comprehensive approach to RCP encompasses various aspects. The university prioritizes ethical sourcing policies, ensuring responsible procurement throughout its operations. They have implemented dedicated waste management protocols for hazardous and non-hazardous materials, minimizing landfill use. Additionally, UGM actively promotes the reduction of plastic and disposable items by encouraging alternative solutions. Notably, their sustainability efforts extend beyond the university itself. Through policies encouraging similar practices among suppliers, UGM is committed to fostering a broader impact within the surrounding community.

Furthermore, UGM’s commitment extends to infrastructure development. By mandating environmentally friendly building standards in contracts with construction companies, UGM ensures all newly constructed facilities adhere to best practices. This approach leverages the expertise of external builders while maintaining UGM’s unwavering dedication to environmental responsibility.

“CLOSING THE LOOP: RECYCLING, REPORTING, AND A SUSTAINABLE FUTURE”

UGM demonstrates a solid commitment to responsible waste management practices. They have implemented a comprehensive standard operating procedure (SOP) that governs waste disposal. This SOP goes beyond simply collecting waste; it includes meticulous planning, evaluation, and measurement of recycled materials and those destined for landfills. This systematic approach allows UGM to optimize its waste management strategy and minimize its environmental footprint.

Furthermore, UGM recognizes the importance of transparency in its sustainability efforts. Investigating whether UGM publishes regular sustainability reports as standalone documents or integrated within more significant annual reports would be a valuable next step in understanding the university’s commitment to open communication and continuous improvement. Regular progress reports demonstrate accountability and allow stakeholders to track UGM’s progress toward its sustainability goals.
