UGM Monitoring IUCN and other conservation species (policies)

Universitas Gadjah Mada (UGM) is committed to conserving biodiversity, including protecting species listed on the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Red List and national conservation lists. While specific policies detailing the identification, monitoring, and protection of these species within university-operated areas are not explicitly documented, UGM undertakes several initiatives that align with these conservation objectives:

  1. Research and Conservation Programs: UGM’s Faculty of Biology actively engages in research focused on the conservation of endangered species. Collaborations with organisations such as the Borneo Orangutan Survival Foundation highlight efforts to protect critically endangered species like the Bornean orangutan.
  2. Environmental Impact Assessments: Before initiating new projects or developments, UGM conducts environmental impact assessments to evaluate potential effects on local ecosystems and biodiversity. These assessments help identify the presence of protected species and inform strategies to mitigate adverse impacts.
  3. Campus Biodiversity Initiatives: UGM implements programs aimed at enhancing campus biodiversity, including the establishment of green spaces and botanical gardens that serve as habitats for various plant and animal species. These initiatives contribute to the conservation of local flora and fauna, some of which may be on conservation lists. Universitas Gadjah Mada, as a centre of knowledge, develops the technology and implements it in daily life. One of the implementations is the effort to conserve plants, animals, wildlife, and genetic resources for food and agriculture. UGM has over 20 nature, wildlife, and agricultural conservation projects. These projects are divided into long-term and medium-term programs. The long-term programs are mostly held by PIAT and Wanagama. PIAT and Wanagama can be considered conservation programs because they support every conservation program available at UGM.
  4. Community Engagement and Education: Through outreach programs and educational activities, UGM raises awareness about the importance of biodiversity conservation among students, staff, and the surrounding community. These efforts promote the protection of endangered species and their habitats.
