Maintaining and extending existing ecosystems requires managing plants and trees within the ecosystem. In terms of policy, UGM ensures the preservation of plants and trees through two SOPs issued by the Directorate of Assets, specifically the Subdivision of Landscaping. Both SOPs Refer to Rector’s Decree No. 458/UN1.IV/SK/HUKOR/2017 concerning the Vegetation Working Group. First is SOP number 05.01.05, the Permit for Tree Cutting and Pruning Standard Operating Procedure. The SOP aims to provide clear guidelines for faculties and units within UGM to conduct tree-cutting and pruning activities. The procedure applies to cutting and pruning trees that exhibit irregular growth patterns, pose safety risks, or have the potential to damage nearby structures.
Second is SOP number 05.01.06, which is the Permit for Pruning Tree Branches/Twigs Standard Operating Procedure. The SOP guides UGM faculties and units in conducting tree branch pruning activities. This is to ensure campus safety, maintain aesthetic appeal, and prevent hazards related to overgrown branches near electrical lines, water systems, or buildings.
In both SOPs, the following procedures start with submitting requests by faculties or units to the Directorate Assets. The request should include photographs of the tree in question. The Directorate reviews the request, conducts a site inspection to assess the necessity and feasibility of pruning, and issues a task order if approved. Execution follows where authorised personnel carry out the pruning activities as per the approved plan. The pruned materials, branches and twigs are collected and transported to designated disposal areas to maintain campus cleanliness.
UGM has several forest areas with local and preserved trees. A total of 7,898,492.02 m² forest area is owned by UGM and spread out in its Main Campus in Bulaksumur, Pusat Inovasi Agroteknologi (PIAT) Berbah and Mangunan, and in Wanagama Eco-Edu Forest.
Arboretum of Biology, Faculty of Biology (UGM Main Campus Forest Area)
UGM’s main campus features three key forest areas: the Arboretum of the Faculty of Biology, the Arboretum of the Faculty of Forestry, and the forest on the west side of Grha Sabha Pramana. The Arboretum of Biology houses a diverse collection of plants from across Indonesia, including 91 species of trees such as meranti (Shorea zeylanica, S. japonica), nagasari (Mesua ferrea), sterkulia (Sterculia foetida), and the yellow-flowering kapok pad (Salamalia malabarica), alongside various palm species. The forest has become a living environment for species of animals as well, such as snakes, dogs, cats, and mice. A list of vegetation (trees and planted vegetation) can be found on DETIK.com. Wow! The Wanagama Eco-Edu Forest, located within the Playen and Patuk Districts of the Gunung Kidul Regency, officially came under the management of the Faculty of Forestry UGM in 1951. However, it was not until the 1960s that the rehabilitation of critical land in Gunungkidul began. Today, the Wangama Eco-Edu Forest is used by the students, professors, and researchers of the Faculty of Forestry to conduct experiments on forest conservation and rehabilitation of critical land. See here for the Decree of the Indonesian Minister of Environment and Forestry Number 493/Menlhk-Setjen/2015 which states that Wanagama Forest, with an area of 6,225,000 m2, shall be used as an Educational and Training Forest for UGM. The Agrotechnology Innovation Center (PIAT) UGM is one of UGM’s center for learning, research, and community service. PIAT has two main lands located in Berbah and Mangunan. Besides its research buildings, the areas are mostly covered by open spaces of forests, plantations, and farms. PIAT has multiple areas of fields of gardens, organic gardens, ponds, fields, and farmland that are covered with planted vegetation. total area of 1,860,000 m2. PIAT Mangunan is covered by forest with an area of 1,510,000 m2 and functions for field study, summer course, and research activities for the academic community. List of trees and vegetation found in PIAT Berbah and PIAT Mangunan is available in here.
